Here in Egypt, movies on VHS were never sold to normal people but to video rental stores and I had a friend who owned one of these stores. I used to make copies for myself for movies I really loved because there was no other way and tbh, the term "piracy" was not very popular here back in the days for personal use. That friend was hit with Macrovision too as he had 2 VCRs and used to copy some highly popular movies for rent (and he faced a Copyright felony back then and paid a hefty fine) but when Macrovision started, he couldn't understand the issue and he was shocked to see I had some normal quality copies of the movies he failed to copy. He asked me to copy some for him but I refused since I knew it is illegal for him to use such copies. He then bought a used old VCR like the model I had to bypass Macrovision. One other hard solution in the late 90s was to have a PC with Video In/Out and that also bypassed Macrovision. I also remember it only affected certain studios like Universal, Paramount, Touchstone and Dreamworks for example but didn't see it with Fox, MGM and WB. |

I never really think of the film without thinking of the criminal in me at six years old, even after I bought the films on dvd and bluray. |

Too bad 6-year-old you didn't figure out that you could simply unscrew the cassettes, open them up and swap the videotape spools. I remember that I recorded the first BTTF off of a cable broadcast (so unedited, uninterrupted) and was proud as shit that I now "owned" BTTF on video. |

In the 20th Century all backup copies of analog Laserdisc, BETA, and VHS tapes were always lossy copies and each generation of the copy 100% of the time had a lower analog video and audio quality when compared to the original. That was true for both homemade movies and copywrited Hollywood movies. This is one of the reasons why I refused to watch illegal copies since they were always lower quality when compared to the original Laserdisc or videotape (counterfeit Laserdiscs never existed since it required a million dollar optical disc factory to stamp a Laserdisc). I always rented or purchased the Laserdisc movie and watched it at home in the late 80’s and 90’s (Laserdiscs also had lossless 2.0 PCM digital stereo, and lossy digital 5.1 Dolby Digital and lossy 5.1 DTS surround sound).
In 1997 the digital DVD format was released in the United States and for the very first-time consumer had digital video, plus similar digital sound quality that the Laserdisc format offered. For 2 years the DVD format was secure until someone compromised the DVD CSS encryption system in 1999. In the 21st Century for the very first time consumers started making bit for bit perfect copies of DVD movies on their personal computers with DVD-ROM style computer drives. In the early 21st Century the DVD backup software that removed the CSS encryption system became so popular that even retail stores like Best Buy by accident had the software on their store shelfs for around a month (However Best Buy removed the software from their retail stores after they realized the backup software they were selling removed the CSS encryption from the DVD format and allowed consumer to make a perfect DVD copy). I think this might have been around the year 2004 but I would need to verify that date. The 2006 Blu-ray format and 2016 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format uses renewable AACS security keys to keep people from making unauthorized copies (BD+ and other security methods). Therefore anyone thinking about making a backup copy of the new coming soon 4K Ultra HD trilogy of Back to The Future are not going to be able to since those movies will use secure unbroken encryption when they are released. In addition blank BD-66 and BD-100 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs do not exist on the market only blank BDXL Blu-ray discs 100GB and 128GB exist which are not compatible with standalone 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray players. |

It ues renewable security and there is no blank discs. So one would have to copy the image to a hard drive server if they are able to make a copy.

Lol @ above...
Anyway. I never had to bother about any bootleg VHS in my childhood as my father purchased BTTF in 1990. Think it was a 1988 australian (village roadshow) VHS -- Now, when it came to VHS I only had like 15 actual copies I owned by 1996 -- Most my collection was recorded off rentals at blockbuster, but I also rented lots of them still for the better PQ during school holidays for my favourites. I still have the boxes of VHS rips though. Some were in LP doubled up onto 5 hour tapes. |
