It has to stand out and be obvious for good or bad to be considered CGI to a large amount of folk? It appears... When you pretty much at this point must assume that any shot you see in a Hollywood movie has some digital tinkering if not outright generation of new elements not in the shooting frame. Not that all does, but that the possibility is there. It's just that it's THAT seamless.

I think the reels of CGI in Scorcese films are some of the best examples.

Based on my quick A-B, the 4K is obviously a good upgrade over the previous BD. Colours looks a bit more natural and balanced.

Part 2 has a scrubbed look (like Goonies) but I need to watch them in full. I doubt if its the compression as I am seeing bit rates hovering between 25-31 Mbps. Even if its compression, I doubt if the grain field will be fully scrubbed on a streaming version and be fully in tact on the disc as I am yet to come across such instance till date. Beverly Hills Cop 2 had loads of grain to the point it did become distracting on few occasions.

But this is a good indication of how the physical versions will look.

I don't think they touched the sequels much.

They definitely have as everything looks natural. The brightness has been boosted a little bit.

I spent some more time glancing the first 2 parts.

BTTF1 looks excellent. I am tempted to say its night and day when compared to the BD.

BTTF2 looks nice too but its missing that extra layer of film grain that BTTF1 had. Grain is still there but its super thin like Goonies but no waxy looking close ups.

BTTF 2 was shot with superior film stock compared to 1 so it will for better or worse have less grain that the original.

Thanks. So the lesser grain presence is fine then. As I said, it doesn't lead to anything looking waxy.

the scenes inside the McFly house at the end of part 1 still look soft and kinda low res to me.

Part II still looks like crap to me and is missing that beat between the bump on the head and waking up in Biff’s mansion.

Why can’t Universal just get these right???

Based on my quick viewing, I am fairly sure they have got it right. Maybe you should have a look at it again with the glasses on.

I was wearing my new glasses when I was watching these on Apple TV+ TV app.

BTTF is that franchise that Universal doesn’t give a damn about. They will do an excellent job with ET, Scarface, Jaws and The Big Lebowski but won’t put the same care into BTTF trilogy. That doesn’t make sense to me. The Big Lebowski didn’t even do well for them theatrically.

ET was a hit or miss on UHD for me.

I think we will have to agree to disagree here. I like the picture on both parts with part1 looking a bit better than part2.

We don't exactly disagree. My only gripe about part 1 was the McFly family stuff towards the end. BTTF 2 has always been rough. To me, its like they didn't do a fresh scan of the original 35mm elements like they did with ET and Jaws, went off the Blu-ray and applied Dolby Vision to make it look like they did a ton of work on the trilogy.

I will check that scene later but BTTF2 looked like its from a new scan when you compare it against the BD version. I will have to check these out in full length once I am free.

Haven't we already seen comparisons of the Blu-ray of BTTF2 to the new transfer available on Netflix? pretty sure the level of detail was far superior so they certainly haven't just spruced up the Blu-ray.

No? Since it's coming out in 3-4 weeks still. People need to stop talking about bitstarved digital copies just a little contemplation goes a long way, eh.

I don't have Netflix so I haven't seen how Back II looks on that platform. But I also don't understand why Universal won't give the trilogy the Jaws treatment?

While obviously they're not going to come close to whatever bitrate they throw at the disc version, the 25-30 Mbps of the iTunes versions is hardly what I'd call "bitstarved".

Regardless, you'll never get a full sense of the texture with streaming. You'll get a hint of it.

Unless I am blind, I am struggling to notice this so called streaming is shite perceptual difference on my 65 inch OLED even from a distance of 2 feet. Yes, there are some differences but its so miniscule. Btw, I am not that niche cream of the crop videophile but I do know some AV basics.

The gap has been closed over the years. I was hellbent to accept it until I saw it myself by doing A-B, pausing at the same timestamp and comparing to understand what the heck is this all about. There are pros and cons of both and I am sure both formats will co-exist for many more years to come.

If I was single or living in a huge house, I would have no problems with buying discs.

Sadly, I could not afford to buy discs simply due to lack of shelf space and the wife was getting mad at me. So had to prioritise my interests, go digital and only buy disc when its absolutely necessary.

Since going digital 3 weeks ago, I had already purchased nearly 220 films on iTunes averaging about $5 per film.

Vast majority should be very happy with BTTF 4K.
