Has Universal modified BTTF sound effects over time?
This trailer proves this happened with the 2nd movie (for the 2020 Blu-ray and UHD, which I checked against the 2010 disc and 4x3 DVD): After 2 minutes, notice the reused footage from the Delorean flying. ********* Now, for part 3, at 18 minutes Doc fires a gun (twice), and Marty goes back to 1885. I checked the same scene with multiple sources... 1) The 4x3 DVD 2) The old 2010 Blu-ray 3) The remastered 2020 Blu-ray 4) The UHD (all tracks) 5) Even 2 different portuguese dubbings, both older than the 2002 DVD release. The results were: 1) and 2) = the same 3, 4 and 5 = the same But... 1-2 are different from 3, 4 and 5. Proof is in this 25 second-clip with all these tracks (download and switch between them), except the ones from UHD, which I don't need to put there since they sound the same as the 2020 BD: - Universal did something similar as WB with the 4 Batman movies (1989-1997). For the 2019 BD (and the UHD), Warner modified the sound effects, and didn't include the former tracks. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Batma...230456/#Review But this time, it was probably the other way around for part 3 (?). They enhanced that sound effect. The old discs probably changed this (at least in this scene; haven't checked others from the trilogy, like the one in 1985-A from Strickland firing that shotgun ("eat lead, slackers!"), and I remember that sound effect was kinda artificial, and more crude for the old dubbed audios). Finally, there's this change I didn't know until recently: In the original version it sounds like the audio is over modulated because Doc did slightly shout the line. And in the Blu-ray it feels like they just leveled the audio. Last edited by Uptight; 10-20-2024 at 09:02 PM. Reason: Removing dead link |

I read that the LD audio was from one print type, and the 4K was from another (35 vs. 70mm). Not sure if that's true. |

If they want to put remixes, fine, at least put the original track there, too. But no, all these people care about is forcing their revisionism down your throats... and they don't even tell you about. I discovered by chance yesterday that BTTF 3 was modified because I was checking these out and suspected in the past what physical media offered us was not 100% faithful to what we saw on TV or old media. And this isn't the first time something is odd/wrong with the BTTF trilogy: https://www.angelfire.com/film/bttf2/ Back when the DVDs were first released, Universal had to do a recall due to framing issues. If they modify a few sound effects most will not know unless comparing to other sources. Also, reviews rarely do that. |

The biggest change for me is the Delorean reveal in the first film, when the engine kicks in before coming out of the truck it was very loud to get your attention now its just slightly loud. Similar to Doc's lines at the same point mentioned above.

If and when prices come down on huge size hard drives, I'd much rather start ripping laserdisc tracks and syncing them up with the BD/4k files. It can be a true slog, especially when there are missing frames, as I've done over a dozen of them. But, in the end, the results are worth it. The audio on Laserdiscs was always utterly phenomenal.
