I told you I wasn't wrong about that part II scene! The dubbed track hinted this could be the case for the DVD and subsequent releases... and there it is.

It looks like some specific sound effects from all 3 movies were altered. What is odd is that despite these changes the fanbase never asks for these while discussing home video releases.

While I wish they wouldn't change them, I barely care about either of those changes. They don't really amount to anything. I'm more bothered by the change with one of the lines from Western Union guy, because it sounds so weird now.

What happened and where? Please explain...

What I want to ask is if these changes were known by the producers back when the discs were first released, or they are unaware of them. When we had that framing "fiasco" Universal did a recall and I had my DVD replaced.

If a few details changed, it's not a matter of replacing the discs, some viewers may favor the modifications. That's not the point, I just want to understand why they would modify and not include the original stereo tracks.

Do we need to start hunting and collecting laserdiscs now?

I always heard Universal had this behavior of not including some old recordings from dubbings, they thought they were not as good as the new ones they could do it today, in 5.1 (nevermind the fact the recent works all suck...). With rare exceptions, they often did this, Paramount too, Warner not so much...

These ancient tapes may not be available somehow, despite being broadcasted for many years, perhaps decades, on national TV.

But... this is stuff from the movie we are talking about. The original english audio. Just like that Eric Stoltz never before seen material, rotting somewhere.

It doesn't matter if it's MONO. Just put there and don't b.itch about it.

This is Back to the Future, not Star Wars, which had 300 versions of the "Han shot first" scene.

Either Universal truly believes we are all idiots or they think no one will notice their revisionism.

So all the audio is revised in the trilogy that’s a shame.

In the original, he says the line without pause. In the new audio, there's slight pause before "be here". I know these films like the back of my hand, and it stuck out immediately. I just popped in my old disc and confirmed that the pause in the line is not present on the prior release. Anyone else notice this? I mean, it's no big deal, but it makes me wonder why the change.

Here's a quick comparison. Original audio first, immediately followed by the new audio: https://chirb.it/1Lf1c9
Link is down though.

Just checked. It's not happening with the 4:3 DVD or the 2010 Blu-ray.

Only with the 2020 Blu-ray, and I bet it's the same if we listen to the UHD.

It's very subtle, though. I don't know why the audio is different.

Here's a sample from all 3, from part II at 1h39m:

4:3 DVD:

-

2010 Blu-ray:

-

2020 Blu-ray:

-

Both audio commentaries (there are 2) are not affected, probably because they are old recordings.

Nahh it's more obvious than that. I think it might depend on the audio track you select. I was on the default track on the UHD when I noticed it, and the clip in the broken link sounded like what I remembered.

Yeah not really noticing much difference with those three samples and believe me I’m a stickler for audio preservation.

Seems like the 2010 Blu-ray audio is thin while the UHD audio is fuller and has a wider dynamic range

laserdisc dolby stereo 4.0 matrix is nice and all but the 70mm 4.1 discrete tracks are the real holy grail for the BTTF trilogy

Dolby Stereo matrixed surround always started out as a four-channel discrete mix (LCR and a mono surround channel) prior to being folded into 2-channel stereo with matrixing applied.

No idea. You would probably need to be apart of the studio archival team.

nah sadly the premium 70mm dolby 6 track sound track has never been released on home media. the dolby stereo used the same 4 main channels then matrixed them to stereo for theaters and home avr to de-matrix them to be almost the same as the discrete mix just lacking the base. so if you have the sound track from the original laserdisc you're like 90% of the way there just missing a tiny bit that i wish they'd release and give us

Still nothing. I guess they won't even take the time to get back to me at this point. Am I gonna have to watch digital copies now to get my BTTF fix? Lame.
