Are the 1080p blus that come with all the 4k sets the 2020 remastered blus?
Im not 4k capable yet but just been thinking about upgrading my 25th Ann blu box set to the remastered 2020 boxset. I then thought I might as well get the 4k set to future proof myself as my Plasma wont last forever. Be nice to have the remastered blus for now and UHDs for later in one swoop. |

Back when the brew ha-ha was going on I think I decided I'd rather stick with my old Blu rays (I wasn't UHD capable at the time). But since I upgraded I wouldn't watch either.

I mean, if they were the only upgrade to those shitty old Blu-rays then I'd still take 'em, but then if they were the only upgrade and 4k HDR did not exist then would they be that badly converted in the first place and oh no I've gone cross-eyed

I never knew HDR to SDR conversion was a factor on 4k remastered Blu Rays.
So every 1080p Blu that has been mastered in 4k has been through this process? Also, why do reviewers, and not just here but all over the web, never notice things that forum members notice? These remastered blus have perfect scores everywhere. Youve got to check every post ever written sbout a release to get the truth! |

As for stuff that's more blatant, such as the Cameron or Peter Jackson titles, I think it's a combination of things. One being that these movies are super popular and some fans can't take any criticism of their precious movies, even if it has nothing to do with the film itself, so there's a hesitation there to call it out. Another one being that these reviews cater to a large audience of people, not just the video and audiophiles, and the stuff we complain about are things the average person may not be bothered by. |

To be real, I don't trust any remastered Blu rays that come in a UHD set now, it's hard enough to get a great encode from some of these companies, you think they care about the 1080p version as much? None of the remastered BDs are going to look as good as the UHD on color and other things, so what's the point. They are literally backups for if my main player takes a dive and I have to slum it playing 1080p discs on a PS3 or something. I really do think a Blu ray made from an SDR master has advantages over the down rez jobs these companies shoot out for the compatibility. If you still buy new sets you should just be on Ultra HD by now. And actually plenty of people with projectors play UHDs with 1080p HDR->SDR and enjoy that over using the Blu ray.

I dont like motion blur and judder so Im holding on to my Panny Plasma til its dead then I have no choice.
Then itll have to go down the motion blur and motion interpolation route on what will probably be a OLED One thing that riles the piss out of me is that the same people who constantly rave over 4k and moan about blurays dated lack of this and tbat are all content to watch on screens that blurs detail anyway, or cant display 24p material without juddrering. Only thonk I can think of is that the old crowd of entusiasts are either dead or cant be bothered anymore and the new enthusiasts arent old enough to remember the hardcore purist arguments from 25 years ago. It used to be all about being faithful to the theatrical experience, black levels, contrast, being uncut etc.. Then I got to my mid 40s and now its all about having big bright digital looking screens with HDR applied to movies from 80 years old to the present. It doesnt matter if films colours are changed now because apparently nobody knew how they looked originally and conviniently all film prints are faded and unreliable and all DVDs were from aging incorrect masters. Now the best TVs cant display films at their native frame rate without judder motion interpolation is ok now as well. In my experience the enthusiasts have become the philistines. In the case of BTTF, the original BDs are pretty bad. The 'remastered' BDs are far more preferable even with their issues as they are more analog looking. You could pick up an HDFury product for HDCP compliance, buy a Panasonic 420 or 820, and try its 1080p Rec 709 SDR tone mapping from the UHD to 1080p on your plasma and see how it looks although it's obviously more costly and involved. But it also future proofs you. Last edited by HeavyHitter; 04-13-2024 at 05:04 PM. |
