They still appear to be off centre but I *think* the idea is that the actors/filmmakers' names (IN CAPS) starts where the middle of the screen is, so it still looks strangely balanced in a way. As an example, look at the centred 'power of love' credit in your bottom example, it's not got some massive shift to it at all.
Isn't that rotated? I can make out more NEWS than HUEY.

It's off-kilter a wee bit (telecine transfers not always being as level as we might think, I forget the movie but once the credits actually shifted angle like that mid-roll!) but the point about it being more centred than not still stands, even on the botched BD credits.

no what i think he meant is it looks like it should but maybe better with no dnr no edge enhancements but with wide color gamut and high dynamic range done right etc. not the awful original release of back to the future trilogy on blu ray was.

I kinda doubt that Universal are just going to upscale the existing 1080p HD telecine transfers though, you know? Universal have done that once, literally once, so if that's what matey was referring to then.....eh

So yeah, I maintain the PQ is good on all three films, knowing full well that brand new transfers would destroy it.

I’ve noticed the original film has a 35th Anniversary release coming on May 29th in the U.K. you can book for. Listed with times on odeon and Cineworld sites in the U.K.

Sure those showings are unlikely to go ahead for the foreseeable, but the date might pretty much confirm the discs are coming in the summer rather than the fall?

I don't really recall the reviews at the time being "certainly very strong", in fact they were mixed at best from what I remember, at least for pt.1, so much so that I passed on the set, even when the price dropped big time. I really only wanted the first movie anyway but yeah, those mixed reviews (word of mouth here was pretty bad honestly) made the decision to pass much easier for me.

edit: but I'm with you on the hope for the new transfers being home runs (fingers are crossed!) because this will be the last shot most likely at owning BttF on physical media - I NEED it and I needs it to look worthy of the $$!

The reviews weren't just strong, they were ecstatic. Which means absolutely nothing to me as I trust most "pro" reviews as far as I could throw them I've disliked this Blu since the moment I laid eyes on it 10 years ago. As I was taking in the persistent contrasty halos around edges, the jacked-up orange tones on their faces and the weird processed look to the grain I was wondering if I had a different copy to everybody else or something, and I saw it projected from DCP around the same time and it didn't look as overbaked as that.

It's not the worst transfer ever and I don't recall saying it was, if people were/are happy with it then that's fine as we've all got different standards. But I haven't touched that Blu since downloading the un****ed "DCP" version and if the UHD turns out as spankingly good as we hope then it'll do what new transfers tend to do and make the Blu look like the outdated relic that it's always been.

Not to beat a dead horse but I think the only way this isn't a home run in terms of beating the old relic BD is if the scan was from too far before the 4K UHD spec, and/or Bob Gale is charged with approving the grade + master in stead of Zemeckis.

Then maybe we get into Jurassic Park UHD territory. But hopefully not

Count me among those who finds the BTTF 1 BD... watchable. But even an average UHD should blow it out of the water, let alone what Universal has proven capable of with titles like Casino and American Gangster.

we we're accoustomed to the the DNR and EE look that it can be hard to readjust to the original grain one

on the Blu part 1 seemed to have a bit too much orange tone on the faces and from those caps seems this is not an issue anymore

It almost looks like someone retyped the credits on the BD as it looks close but off, like they had to update something on the credits

Well I checked them again of course. And they were. I abhor DNR and noise reduction, etc and honestly this never struck me as going too far.

Yes, even though I kvetch about the DNR and particularly the sharpening I could actually put up with them if the colour wasn't so off, those blazing orange skin tones are just fugly. It's why I dig the "DCP" version as much as I do, it's not just that it looks far more filmic (or as "far more filmic" as an 18yo HD scan from an IP is going to get) it's that it also corrects that orange peel look to their skin.

Geoff D, Why do you always use quote marks when you talk about the DCPrip?

I know that some people thought it could be from an HDTV master instead but I still have screenshots from the original uploader before he released the rip online and they are in 1998x1080 which matches the definition of a 1.85:1 2K DCP.

I'm pretty convinced it is an actual DCPrip.

Because I'm not convinced. Doesn't really matter though, does it? It looks great for what it is.
