A 40th Anniversary Edition is probably going to be announced and we still don't have:

- All the Eric Stoltz footage, that was said to exist (they know it could be made available right away, even as an easter egg, and nothing would happen);

- The original 2.0 english track, only the 5.1 (modified) ones; no word on restoring these, and apparently the """"""hardcore fans"""""" always forget to ask that to Bob Gale;

- Very few new extras added every 5 years, when there are A LOT others that could be there, if they were not cheapskates

RIP

I did see a DCP screengrab of this and it looked a lot better than the commercial 4K disc publicity available.

I’d like to think that a remaster would be on the cards in some years.

I saw this one in a nice condition 35mm print of BTTF around the time the first BD was released. I wonder if they like to DNR this one because it's a fairly grainy film. Not a whole lot of detail, natural colors throughout, but chunky grain.

Why would they release the Stoltz footage? He was the actor they rejected.

Exactly. Back to the Future is one of my all time favorite films. I have zero interest in seeing lost footage of an actor that was replaced. It's bad enough they left one of his scenes in the film.

Seeing some of the Stoltz footage is interesting. Seeing every scrap of it is pointless. The movie wasn't working as they wanted it to so they recast.
It's an insult to him to show all of it, as if to say...."see how bad he was in the role."

Stoltz could potentially even sue for compensation if it was all released in a for profit manner as a large bulk of the film was shot with him as Marty. It wasn't simply a few minutes worth of footage. The filmmakers practically made the first film twice, at least in terms of principal photography.

Normally, I'd say he got paid for his work, so it wouldn't really matter what they did with the old footage. However, seeing as how Crispin Glover smoked them in his lawsuits, it probably wouldn't be the best idea to release all that footage of Stoltz and is likely why we haven't seen more. I suppose they could let it all be seen online for free or something, but that doesn't make them any money. lol

Any news or rumors of a 40th anniversary release?

Maybe just a re-release of the existing 4K versions?
No?
Well o.k then.

He said they were pretty far into filming:

It's funny all of you seem to forget that lost footage isn't just about the guy, also features the rest of the cast that interacted with him.

I don't think he could win any lawsuit over the release of those deleted scenes, or bother to complain about them made public, the issue here is Bob not wanting to do it for (whatever) personal reasons, which may extend to some of the cast not having the "best memories" of Eric.

Bob also felt people would not be kind when reacting to his performance, which is BS in my opinion, it's not the end of the world when someone's acting doesn't land, it's not like A or B are the worst ever, it could simply means another role is best suited for them.

If this is all about the audience being sensible about that situation, I can say current viewers would not appreciate actors from 50+ years ago (see spoiler), which we all know were among the best ever. I am sure plenty would think them to be worse.

The truth is that real fans want to consume (and enjoy) everything related to the franchise, and that includes the deleted scenes. The fact it's not included into the final cut is not reason to be discarded or considered subpar... if this was always the case, Superman and other franchises would not have fans asking for refused footage until this day.

Michael J Fox, at the time, was quite diplomatic about the whole situation with Stoltz and his removal from the project.

It is not an actor's finest hour to be fired, especially when their performance is sub par or not jiving with a project... and they know it.

Stoltz even stated he went back to acting school specifically because of the BTTF fiasco and it made him a better actor and a better person for it.

I think re-releasing the movie with Stoltz would be rubbing salt in the wound. I've seen some of the leaked footage and I can absolutely understand why Eric was not right for the part and that his interpretation of Marty didn't fit with the wacky, adventurous tone of the film.

We had the DCP (for a Fathom Event) a couple years ago, exact same as the UHD disc.

What are the chances of Universal rereleasing Back To The Future Trilogy 4K for the 40th Anniversary this year with possibly new bonus features?
Can’t decide whether to buy the set now or wait a few months…

If they do a 40th anniversary set, it will most likely be the same discs in new packaging.

Wait for the 50th anniversary set including the eventual movie adaptation of the Broadway musical adaptation.

The audio for Part II needs fixed at any rate.

Not sure if all three have new Foley, but Part II does, and has a redubbed sweary line, I think.

I know they won't put on the original stereo mixes because, ew, it's old and shit.

But there's a chance the 5.1 tracks from the DVDs were untouched 70mm.

EDIT: No, looks like the DVD tracks were remixes, too.

I guess we're screwed, Doc.

Seriously, how hard can it be, even if it has new characters time-traveling, to replicate these aspects from the trilogy, instead of producing lame cartoonish stuff?

And what about releasing the original/unaltered 2.0 stereo tracks? Ever since the first DVDs in the early 2000s, it's all 5.1 and remixes.

As for the Eric Stoltz footage, he was under contract, the material doesn't belong to him after he did his part, they can release ALL deleted scenes today if they want to, and Eric would not mind or make a fuss about it, despite the experience back then not being good for him.

In fact, it would be contrary to what was said, he would be praised for his attempt/take on the character.

Instead, for decades we had all this footage which is said to exist, unavailable... weeks of work sitting in the vault, thanks to that moron called Bob Gale.

A user at the Internet Archive synced the original LD Dolby Stereo Surround tracks to use with the 4K Trilogy. Audio purists, you need to grab these if you haven’t already.
