In Eric Stoltz's case this is entirely different. All the footage is owned by the studio, I don't see how an actor can prevent deleted scenes or a director's cut from a movie to be ever released.

I am assuming Stoltz would have no say in this matter.
There Will Be Blood comes to mind as another movie with a performance with a recast part, and we have yet to see any footage of the original Eli Sunday actor, Kel O'Neill.

I think it seems especially cruel to offer up footage of a performance that ultimately led to an actor getting fired. That'd be like getting fired from a job and your old boss sharing the work that got you terminated in perpetuity. No one comes out looking very good.

I'll take faithful to source in lieu of "pretty". What I fear is Universal smashing all the opticals (and shots that weren't opticals but some idiot or algorithm thought they were) with DNR like they did on Waterworld.

Yes, and their name may or may not rhyme with 'Gob Bale'

How often and when can we expect that to happen?

Didn't Bob Gale approve the DNR on the BD's?

Just get the same team that worked on Casino, Backdraft and Scarface. Call it a day.

There will be some filtering but as long as they keep it minimal I’ll have no issues.

It seems like the more Bob Gale is involved, the more mistakes are made. That's my take anyway.

Absolutely.

As long as it DOESN'T look like it does on Netflix, we'll be okay

I didn't realise how much of Part 2 was shot on the Vistaglide. So many shots with short segments intercut with standard 35mm in entire scenes. It's quite jarring (in terms of colour/contrast/grain).

In other news, I found out a little more about Part 1, and it seems daylight scenes/indoor sets were shot on 5247 instead of 5294. So if it ends up being done right, it should be quite fine grained.

Even if they just used the 94 for the night exteriors, there's enough of those scenes for this to still be grainy as **** for a fair chunk of the running time. Will have to read the AC articles again.

[edit]

Ugh, if there were any. Cundey didn't become a member of the ASC until 1986. But I'm still not convinced they used the 47 for anything other than daylight exteriors and the 8-perf VFX.

Man I hope they don’t DNR the heck out of the 4K release like they did with Star Wars. Sure the movies are outdated with old effects but keep the grain in tact as much as possible.

I doubt it, it's Universal not Disney.

I'll see if I can find the article again.

But there's also this from behind the scenes of the band audition.
Skip to 54 seconds.. For some reason the time stamp didn't copy.

Were there any ASC articles about the sequels?

Nice detective work, I'm glad I'm not the only one who makes it a point to look at the labels on the film mags in BTS footage, and as such I stand corrected.

There are a few AC articles about the sequels.

Considering Australia is in a 4K drought right now with only one release coming out on the format I feel UniSony will not release these down under.

why is Bob Gale supervising the releases anyway, he is not a director. Zemeckis and/or cinematographer Dean Cundey should be the people overseeing restorations

God only knows. The more he gets involved the more things get screwed up.

He's the co-creator of the movies and is basically the keeper of the flame for all things BTTF related. Zemeckis doesn't seem to care all that much about BTTF any more and Cundey can't force his way into proceedings, they'd need to invite him to take a look at it.

To be fair, Disney didn't DNR the original trilogy of Star Wars, Lucasfilm did.*

*Yes, technically Disney already owned LFL at the time, but my point is that Lucasfilm messed with Star Wars all by itself.

Yes, but they DNRed a lot of other movies, so in my case I'm more concerned with Home Alone than Back to the Future.
