I wanted them in their own individual cases and the only option at the time was the Best Buy steelbook set. I'm not a fan of steelbooks and on top of that they had terrible art. I'm very happy these are finally getting amaray cases with original art.

Well, you may not want to look at my collection then ...

I've become less "crazy" in this regard in recent years, though. For instance, I didn't bother trying to import those individual 4K BTTF Steelbooks that came out last year, as cool looking as they were. At one point in time I would have jumped on them no matter the price/hassle involved.

That said, I will probably get this new 4K Trilogy set at some point (I may wait for a sale, though). This is the kind of packaging I would have preferred when the 4K set first came out.

FOMO is a helluva drug, even for just a bit of paper and plastic... or steel. I'd be lying if I said I'd never been under its seductive influence. Such is collecting anything.

Yeah but... those damn "discs inside the pages" digibooks are a recipe for disaster. I have the BTTF set (got it for like $10 on that Gruv pricing error), but I always use the digital because those wretched disc sleeves have me anxious about scratching the discs.

I think studios will eventually release movies in sleeves or a bad artwork then re-release it again in separate cases with original artwork as a strategy to get us to buy them twice.

I have to say, that is the craziest thing about this hobby to me. That it ever became a thing to begin with, and that everyone didn't instantly revolt.

Back in the earlier days of Blu-ray, this is why I would import from Amazon UK because they didn't play that shizz over there (SW, Alien Quad, Batman set, etc).

With 4K I've just put up with it because we don't have much of a choice and Amazon UK is no longer the bargain priced place it once was, but no matter how pretty the slick looking little "books" they sell are, it just screams low-rent to me. And completely antithetical to the storage recommendations for optical discs.

Today years old and I'm finding out I could have bought Alien Anthology in a digipak instead.

Which Batman set uses sleeves?

Yeah, I hate sleeves like that. That is why when the 4K Trilogy was first released, I got the exclusive Steelbook set, even though I really don't like the art on them. I just wanted better protection for the discs.

And when there is no choice in official packaging, I'll move the discs to regular cases and print up artwork if they come in that kind of book/page packaging.

I've always hated them anyway but the last straw was my TOS Blu-ray set, I dug it out recently and the gloss coating on the digipak sleeves had delaminated and literally stuck the discs inside the holders. I got them out but was left with a bunch of stubborn crud on the playing surface of several discs which simply would not come off (and I hear wire wool isn't a great thing to use on discs?), so I chucked the whole set in the bin. Cannot overstate how much I despise them.

(That said I can live with what they did on the European Avatar Collectors edition digis, the disc slide in and out verr smoothly, and as they're pressed in Europe the discs weren't scratched to balls to begin with.)

If they released these with slipcovers, I would've been in. Rebuying these for an individual case is insane.

There was a Friday the 13th dvd set that came with a mask and digibook. It was so poorly designed that taking the disc out would scratch the hell out of it to the point it was unplayable. Never got to watch a single one of those discs because none of them survived the packaging.

Tyvek disc sleeves are your answer. Take the discs out once, place them in the sleeves, and store those in the pages of the digibook. Have used that process on multiple sets now, and none of the discs are scratched in any of them.

Buying them for individual cases is insane, but buying them for slipcovers (aka fragile pieces of cardboard) is not insane... ah yes, flawless logic.

I got the 'break-away' set for a decent price and don't want to pay double its price for another set in individual cases. The Alien Anthology (blu-ray) booklet was decent as they had cut-outs for your finger to lift the disc out without too much contact on the data side (and it was/is a very handsome case). Die-Hard and the Bourne booklets were worse as the sleeves are simply made to grasp the disc on both sides and slide it out. In addition the Die Hard booklets are very tight and will probably cause scratching no matter how careful you are. It would be nice if Paramount would offer the individual covers for the botched set at a nominal fee, but I'm dreaming here... At some point in the future they may be discounted enough to buy a replacement set cheaply. Still, it must be acknowledged that they saw the problem and corrected it with the individual cases.

On my copy, the flap connecting the pages for the 4K and 1080p copies of Part II pops out of its pocket if I'm not careful, so I'd get an updated set if it came with a voucher for Back to the Future: The Musical.

I like slipcovers for my all-time favorite flicks.

Judge me.
