The sub-HD resolution of reel 2 is, yes. But not the weird chroma smearing. That’s on both the 4K and the Blu-ray.

I can't believe anyone let that pass without a recall / replacement program of some kind. The BTTF series has a long history of disc errors, back to mis-framing of some scenes in BTTF2 on DVD (?) for which there were replacements.

Absolutely rebuying this. I’m that much of a sucker for original poster art. Especially art as iconic as this.

Is it worth contacting someone about possibly getting the issues fixed or would that be a futile attempt?

it would likely be futile, it's also not something that can be fixed with a simple re-encode since reel 2 is an issue with the master itself, but people have clearly forgotten how god awful the old BDs were anyway, instead choosing to pick apart still perfectly fine 4K masters

the BTTF 4K disks are not "shitty disks", flawed at times yes, but not shitty, if you want a shitty 4K disk then I'll give you one and it's far worse than what BTTF's 4K masters have to offer

I generally agree with your comment, but I have a question: if the issue with reel 2 is baked into the master, then why does the remastered blu-ray from the same master not have the same issue?

Likely a conversion issue of some sort, which is done before the disk encode

It's like a Silence of the Lambs situation here where the 4K version had one reel that was bad but the rest was fine, but the 1080p versions of the same master were problem free in the affected reel and the issue didn't have anything to do with the 4K disk encode itself

BTTF is one of those special films where they managed to bugger both the audio and video. That takes the kind of love and care only a Hollywood studio can provide.

I have loved all these movies ever since my childhood, and I definitely plan on getting the 4K versions soon. I'm also glad Universal decided to re-release it in better packaging, because I still remember the horrendous choices first made for the 25th-anniversary Blu-Ray release in 2010.

The sad thing is it's not so much the studio at fault, as Bobs Gale and/or Zemeckis have to sign off on these and yet all this crap manages to sneak through time after time. The BTTF UHDs are not disasters but the first film especially has some weird shit going on.

At the risk of playing "devil's advocate" here, Zemeckis may not be aware of the problems with the transfers, since he's largely moved on and has established himself as a prominent filmmaker elsewhere. On the other hand, Bob Gale is pretty much the steward for the franchise, so if anyone besides the studio knew about the problem it would likely be him. Also, its important to note that the second film in particular has many more VFX shots than either the first or the third, so if the second reel of footage has been compromised, it might be at the source. I haven't read anything on this recently, but unless I'm wrong the last proper remaster was done for the 25th-anniversary Blu-Rays, and that was 14 years ago. If Universal decided not to spring for another revamp this time around, that could be one reason for the quality difference.

What are the flaws on the 2020 (Ultimate Trilogy) edition? That's the one I have. Will upgrade to 4k eventually if they get all the issues fixed.

I have the Blu-Rays, but I haven't watched them in a while. I don't recall seeing any major problems with the image, but I also had a much smaller TV at the time too. I bought my 4K TV two years ago, but some folks here initially told me it wasn't fully compatible. Eventually, I called up the manufacturer and found the manual online. Its not a high-end set like the ones that cost thousands, but it'll do for my own purposes.
