And yes, it did exist in SD letterbox: both on Laserdisc and in the bonus materials of the BTTF DVDs/BluRays (I think, it was "Making of Back to the Future, Part II").
ah, so they did talk about it in the Making of Part II.
I probably saw that and forgot. I look forward to watching it again when this set comes.

Yeah. Too bad that Making Of is an older one (4:3 SD).

It's been originally made on film. The VHS/Laserdiscs had an open matte version of it besides the letterboxed editions and that featurette on the DVD.

Yep, it was done on film. Was never featured anywhere in HD, unfortunately.

Just feels inconsistent with the other two movies without it.
The interesting thing about this is that I remember people booing at the end of the second movie in theaters when that tag showed up at the end, me being one of the people. This is back when people generally clapped at a good movie (or even just at pilots for managing a landing ). But today I don’t care either way over that bit.

I was at BTTF Part II for opening night back in 1989. I also remember people moaning at the "To Be Concluded..." tag at the end. I knew it was coming since I read Starlog back then and was aware of a Part III.

What's funny is that immediately after the moaning and hissing, the teaser for Part III came on and then people started laughing(mostly in a good way). Universal was wise to attach that to the film.

I remember seeing it in theatres and being nothing but excited and thrilled at the end. I had no idea there was going to be a III, certainly not that it was already made and here's a trailer.

Also, they use the word "Concluded" to let you know it's ONE more. They're not dragging it on forever.

I think about that often, they filmed another whole movie without the general film audience knowing. Could never happen now; right?

I may just be retconning this but even as a kid I knew they were shot back to back, it was quite a big deal at the time because there weren't many movies that were shot that way (and still aren't). I guess I must've heard it on Film '80-whatever with Bazza Norman or read aboot it in the paper.

I’ve said this before, but I remember being annoyed, even at 9 years old, to see the trailer immediately. I was definitely aware the sequels were being made back to back, but to not even let us walk out of the cinema imagining Part 3 - man o man.

Still, it then became HOW was he going to get back to 1885 in the finale. Magical anticipation on opening night. The answer was of course utter genius too.

It would bug me more now. I avoid trailers of movies I already want to see.
Any now you mention it, nothing about the end of II suggests a western setting is coming (i know Doc hints at it earlier in the film)

So at the end, we know there's another one coming, and then suddenly "what is THIS?"
Total madness on the screen.

Not in Germany. There, the text in Part II was "To Be Continued" (in German).

And my dumb kid brain would have sworn I read "Continued" when I first saw it in theatres. Like I saw the words but didn't actually read them.
I think we even used "to be continued" as a noun then it was so common on TV.
"There was a 'to be continued' "

I definitely had an awareness that II and III were shot back-to-back, and I think they were released only six months apart in the U.S. The original BACK TO THE FUTURE was already one of my all-time favorite flicks, but I don't remember seeing II on its initial release. I was already pretty skeptical of sequels back then. I do distinctly remember when III came out: I was finishing up my first year of college in May 1990, and a huge group of us from my freshman dorm went to see a marathon screening of all three films back-to-back-to-back(-to-the-future), at the AMC Kabuki Theaters in San Francisco. It was totally marketed around how II and III were shot as one giant movie. We had an epic and incredibly fun time... but I think I've only revisited II and III once-or-twice since that time.
