Let that sink in. "When they did the remastering for the Blu-ray..."

The DCP I saw did have DNR and EE. Better than the BD, but that is not saying a lot as it still looked over-processed and overly digital.
The full quote was about BTTF coming back to cinemas before the blu-ray release.

He's not talking about the blu-ray directly, rather the DCP he saw projected.
Obviously the reason for doing all of the work was for the BD, but this quote isn't about how great the BDs look. Simply the rationale for the remastering was the blu-ray. And sure the DCPs look average. But nowhere near the level of the BDs bad.

I’m sure one will be a crappy, overpriced Zavvi exclusive.

Sadly true, I assume. :-/ I've ordered several things from them in the past with no issue, but they never seem to get pre-order stuff out on time (or at all), so I would hesitate to order from them.

But this quote is being used out of context.

"HeyUGuys

It must be exciting having Back to the Future coming back into the cinemas.

Bob Gale

I tell you…I saw the movie projected eight days ago and it looks so good, so much better than it did in 1985. When they did the remastering for the Blu-ray they spent over 400 hours doing dirt cleanup, and almost another 200 hours doing colour correction, so the movie looks better than it ever did. So I'm gathering that Bob Gale may have seen the initial remaster (which is still apparently average at best) screened at a cinema, before Universal put their patented awesome-sauce in for the actual Blu-Ray transfers.

Bingo.

You're taking a 2K scan of an IP, cleaning it up a bit = meh/passable DCP for 2010. Add in the extra special Universal default blu-ray treatment from 2010 on top of that and we got what we got...

I remember Bob Gale saying he was "wowed" or something at what Universal was able to do with the picture (adding DNR and EE) when the Blu-rays came out. The guy is pretty clueless and ignorant.

Why didn't Zemeckis or the DP supervise those transfers?

Some of you guys are taking the piss not understanding how it can be true he was "wowed" by a DCP in a theatre screening and signed of on that "remaster for blu-ray" but not had a hand in or condoned the final result which reportedly went further with DNR and EE implementation -- It's all up in the air what the actual reality was.

He may never have even seen the result on disc before all the quotes came out about the blu-rays that conflate the two concepts. And he isn't gonna come out later and revise his statements on a product he has vested interest in selling well; which he most of all does. He's basically paid ambassador and promotions face for all BTTF properties.

And all this is to say he shouldn't be within 100 feet of supervising anything PQ related on Back to the Future. And it seems he hasn't been looked at any stage for PQ direction on this one.

Actually, I remember him saying they showed him a proper, normal transfer and then their "enhanced" treatment, which is the one that "wowed" him. He was amazed at how "sharper and cleaner" Universal's processed mess was, basically. Like I said, the guy is clueless.
