Mucho processing & sharpening is doing it's job well, for even in comparison to the "DCP" rip (where the rampant grain is dithering away some detail) the old Blu-ray still looks significantly more detailed. But it's so plasticky and artificial with it that I'll take a softer look with equivalent or less detail every goddamned time, though it'd be nice to have the BD caps upscaled to 4K so we can actually compare like for like in a spatial sense, whereupon the UHD might still be more detailed after all...

We really are splitting hairs at this point.

One doesn't need to upscale the BD caps to see that it clearly is - obvious with the first cap already. Just look at the collar (jeans pattern) or the fine lines on the shirt (on the grey stripes) for ex - completely gone on the old BD.

Did you misplace your glasses again?

Just got notice from Best Buy that my steelbook set has shipped. Typically it comes out of the warehouse in my town so I could have the set by tomorrow or Saturday at the latest.

This will be the first set of movies I'll be watching in Dolby Vision since installing a HDFury Vertex 2 to get low latency DV on my projector. Looking forward to diving into these this weekend.

So it appears that BTTF's UHDs aren't going to break that cycle.
Yeah I think you are right. Looking back on the BttF website, its more of a technical spec list of audio formats. Bummer though. I hope they've at least not used new foley effects in the new mix.

That's the thing about the old BDs; it wasn't just DNR as there are discs on my shelf which are worse, but also the relatively limited color gamut and over-saturation, sharpening, but the clipping and contrasted look looked really nasty with it all. The sum of all parts - major Ugh!

Typical that when I don't respond to someone with an unequivocal YES/NO answer and play devil's advocate (because Chris is usually pretty good with this stuff and I was trying to humour him) I still catch some shit from someone else playing the hardass!

I left the comment at the end with the "..." because I can clearly see better detail, like on Marty's denim jacket in the top one (edit: and I see you've literally posted that while I was typing this, lol), but it'll still be nice to have them both in the same spatial, er, space so people can truly see what's what, as clearly they're not able to discern this from the caps as they are. Mmmkay?

Very nice upgrade on BTTF1. Slightly more filtered than I prefer, but still filmic enough.

The shots look very promising. It also looks like they've warmed it up and made it a bit sunnier, which I don't mind as I've always felt the previous transfers have been oddly cool and dull and occasionally undersaturated.

Look at that comparison of Marty and his guitar. Night and day difference. It looks so good.

Nice jump in fine detail.
Differences are larger than expected after some of the earlier discussions.
That Hill Valley or the Hill Valley High School are night and day.

I remember going by and seeing the Hill Valley set in person for Back to the Future 2 during the shoot.

Man, skintones looks so much nicer and more filmic in this shot. Finally a decent edition that's actually worth paying cash money for.

My pleasure. You cannot simply post wischiwaschi comments around here - this is serious business. (and I thought you could take it) (The images also weren't for you in particular.)

In general: By "The old Universal" standards it looks great to me, by "The new Universal" standards I think it could've looked better.

I'm not kidding when I say that the stuff with Doc and Marty at the school there was one of my most hated moments for skin tones on the old BD, with that dull one-note orange tone and even orangey lips. George knocking out Biff was the worst though, just this flat blown out orange peel look to their faces throughout that sequence.

I like the general improvement in this one as well. You get a completely different impression of the shot with proper colors and no dirty, blown-out, sharpened video look.
