We watched 2 and 3 last weekend but not the first one. I'll check it out this weekend and see how it plays in my Series X.

I have the old 2010 3-disc BD set.

Just to confirm, the review here says the new 4-disc UHD set, which I just bought, contains all the bonus features from both the 2010 BD set and the 2015 BD set.

Is that correct? I want to be sure there aren't any from the 2010 BD set I have, in particular, that failed to make it to the new UHD set.

Thanks!

The new discs don't have the U-control features.

The 2010 Blu-ray set had two different trivia tracks for each movie. As far as I know, these are the only special features not included on the UHD set and new Blu-ray set.

I never looked at them, to be honest, I just watched some of the featurettes, and the then-new making-of doc.

Are any of the U-control features worthwhile? It's like a popup track where you can watch occasional short EPK videos and such as the movie plays, right?

Yeah, it's generally some fairly inconsequential stuff. I never watched them either, I usually find such things rather tedious

I was gifted the Blu-ray set for my birthday (yay ). Though with it not being the UHD copy, how much of a loss am I missing out on video/audio quality wise, as in major or minor difference?

Thanks!

New Blu set: still better than the old Blus.

Old Blu set: kill it with fire

The remastered 2020 Blu-rays are a very good improvement over the 2010 originals, but the 4K versions are still the best.

Yeah, I did some research. The new remastered Blus look just as equivalent to the UHD even if the 4K version has slight uptick in texture clarity. Only thing I found to be a significant loss is the absence of Dolby Atmos on the BD.

Has it been explained why some shots on the 4K look so blurry, you'd almost think 720p proxies were left in the final render?

Yes, it is because of the DNR. How much it negatively impacts the image various dependent on the section of the film and settings they may have used.

Well that sucks. Strange that they'd do that to the 4K and leave the Blu untouched. And it honestly doesn't even look like DNR to me. Some shots like this one have pixelization that I wouldn't expect to see from DNR, but from less actual resolution.

At 400% zoom, and on a lossy still frame?

That better?

Edit: I took the Remastered Blu-Ray screencap, downscaled it to 720, then back to 4K, and compared to the 4K Blu-Ray. This was the result of leaving in low resolution proxy files, not DNR. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

That is interesting. That seems like something more amiss than just the DNR. The fact that the remastered blu-ray is actually resolving more detail than the 4K version is very curious indeed.

I wonder if somehow proxy files were used for some strange reason in the encoding stage. This issue is not present for the complete encode of BTTF but there are certain sections that have been discussed since release that have stood out as odd for various reasons.

Anyhow they all have been grain managed and how much it negative it impacts the image depends. Mostly it is fine...

My thoughts indeed. I sent the caps a holic link and my screenshot comparison, along with the proxy explanation, to Universal HE. Hopefully they get back to me.

Edit: I've done some more digging, and Parts II and III seem to be unaffected, and in Part I, the issue starts at exactly 18:25 and ends at exactly 37:25.

Update.

Swapped out the Blu-ray set for the UHD. Paid $13 for it. Currently watching Part 1. Looks great. Now I’m happy

Does anyone know some sort of authorities in the Blu-Ray reviewing community I could bring this up to that could put some pressure on Universal to get this fixed? I haven't heard a peep back from Universal after 4 emails. I could put together a comprehensive comparison between the Blu-Ray and the 4K showing the issue, if need be. I just need to know who to send it to.
