I rather liked the way the UHD looked as it kicked the ass of the shitty old Blu-ray, but I'd rebuy this in a heartbeat if they fixed that weird 10-minute reel with VHS-style chroma bleed.

I'm curious what an "IMAX restoration" means for a film that was shot on conventional 35mm. The only other 35mm film I can think of that had a restoration billed that way was SE7EN. I hope Zemeckis didn't dip into AI and revisionism.

I can't unsee that entire sub-4k reel from JC Penny to the 1955 diner.

It hopefully just means they want to sell more expensive tickets for the re-release.

Zemeckis hasn't really been the type to meddle with his classics, and BttF has always looked really great (well, except for a couple of specific shots), so it seems unlikely they'd bother changing anything.

Fingers crossed that the eventual UHD of this restoration looks like film.

I nearly re-bought the existing UHD boxset last month, to get the films in individual plastic cases, instead of the cardboard packaging the first cruddy pressings had. Glad I waited.

I doubt there'll be a release of this with the 'IMAX restoration', whatever that means. For all we know it's the current 4K put through their DMR pipeline.

My first thought too, no idea what that means. I can think of a handful of things it could be, none of them particularly good, but I'd be more inclined to think a new UHD is in the pipeline if there was word of the other 2 as well. I doubt they'd release a new UHD of just the original but it's interesting any way

I'm guessing it will be framed as per the open matte old VHS some of us grew up with and then upprezzed a bit from the 4k to reach IMAX resolution.

I mean extra height in this case is effectively the non cropped version from the old VHS days. I don't see why this would lead to a 4k release.

Would we want the open matte versions on 4k?

Agreed. There's that word "restoration" being thrown around again, when in this case, "remaster" or "conversion" are probably more apt.

I doubt this will be 1.43. Very likely it will be 1.85 slightly windowboxed within the 1.90 frame that most IMAX theaters have these days.

For what it's worth, the TCL Chinese is a native 1.90 screen, though it has sometimes been masked to 1.43 for certain films.

How come this is getting another release? Anything new or just the same picture/audio/special features?

This is the third time they're repackaging these movies in the UK, first release was the digipack, followed by two keepcases in a slipbox, one for the 4Ks and another for the BDs.

I feel like they should've gone for individual cases after the digi, with the shelf friendly jumbo last.

You must have incredible vision, because I've seen the movie across many formats for over 30 years, and never noticed any change in the picture compared to the rest. If I recall correctly, the DVDs showed some of the matte boxes around the flying DeLorean in Part II, but I think the Blu-Rays corrected that.

I think he's taking about the weird interlacing on the 4k

That image looks over-sharpened on the Blu-Ray, but more natural on the 4K (given that it was shot from far away instead of a close-up).

It could be inherent to the source, given that the first film only had a $19 million budget (which wasn't much even 40 years ago).
