Makes no sense for Sony to make a PS4.5 when they could just wait 2 more years and release the PS5 and take better advantage of the available GPU and memory advances.

A new model that plays 4K is no brainer this year.
It only doesn't make sense if we look at it in terms of "generations" MS is also rumoured to be releasing an updated xbox one so traditional generational consoles may well be on the way out, in which case I'll be on my way out of gaming.

Ending generations is even worse. New consoles will just come out every couple years like PC's and phones. Yuck.

They'll be no more early adopters to sell to. Everyone will wait till next hardware refresh. Developers will have no target hardware to take advantage of.

Sony and MS better think long and hard before they go through with this mess.

You don't *have* to upgrade.

In any case I can see them doing what they do now on the PC, one version of the game itself that adjusts automatically to the capability of the console it's installed on.

At that point, gamers might as well save money and buy a gaming PC instead. I still don't have a PS4 or Xbox One because I now game on my PC, and every game I have interest in is on PC as well. The only thing that would make me buy a PS4 is if Sony re-releasing one with an UHD player built in. Even then, I would still wait until it is cheaper.

If there’s time and interest, Peter can explain how the display reference transform works when using a monitor with a luminance of ~ 1000 nits or, for those folks using a monitor having a luminance of ~ 4000 nits (Dolby Pulsar).

In a nutshell, with ST 2084 based approach, the luma range goes up to 10,000 nits meaning the luma waveform demonstrates 100% at 10,000 nits, so when grading in HDR, the display reference transform roll off goes to ~ 85% for 4000 nits and 75% for 1000 nits capable monitors respectively.

Can someone just retitle this thread "General 4K Chat" since nobody is even talking about releases anymore?

At the recent game developers conference Microsoft talked about their plans for HDR. Microsoft will support two HDR encoding methods in Windows. 10-bit HDR with 10,000 nits of brightness and the Rec. 2020 color space. 16-bit HDR with 5.2 million nits of brightness and the sRGB color space. I am disappointed to see that Microsoft went with sRGB for 16-bit HDR but they made it a simple method to keep it cheap and it will likely get replaced in a few years. Also the 16-bit HDR method that Microsoft made has 1/80th the precision of the 16-bit HDR method used in the video industry (with Microsoft 1.0 is equal to 80 nits while with the video industry 1.0 is equal to 1 nit).

HDR and rec 2020 for games looks like the next step. AMD's Polaris GPU's are designed for that

Note that it supports 1080p HDR. The gaming industry showing the BDA how it's done.

Don't have a problem with HDR for games. It's a perfect match just like i think CG animation will be. I already use a vivid color space and turn my brightness up a little when playing games. Same for animated blurays sometimes. Being able to do that accurately with more color and brightness range sounds fine to me.

Sap, nice slide show from Radeon, although I kind of wish they’d given credit to the original author (not the gaming industry) of the pic they used to demonstrate the BT. 2020 vs. BT. 709 color volume comparison and included this one to emphasize the value of beyond 709 color….

Haha. I only meant that there will be 1080p HDR games. Last i remember there won't be any HDR blurays.

Making fun.

First, in order to truly have and appreciate a ‘4K’ Movie Release, you need good eyesight (often taken for granted until it’s been compromised) to properly see them

and technically real 4K cameras
to acquire the imagery. But, if it would make you feel more comfortably compartmentalized and happy, I would be amenable for a change in title to the thread akin to Next gen Wisdom, of course, maintaining it as a sticky in the Ultra HD Blu-ray and 4K forum.

It's been a general chat for years. Where have you been? Why complain now?

There's nothing wrong with the title. Maybe stop taking it too literal? You can say that about any thread on here.

Attention People…who care about important things about fellow members,

Given his advanced age, I’m a little concerned about the absence of our once regular poster Ray, from Irvine… https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...y#post11531755 and I have no personal contact information for him.

Is anyone aware of any misfortune to our friend? Ray, if you can read but not respond, this is something non-clinical out of your neck of the woods in Irvine, just published….http://www.imbs.uci.edu/~kjameson/Ja...rb2016HVEI.pdf

Or, for gentler reading to other folks on the topic of color (Geoff, mike, that’s 'colour')….http://www.bbc.com/future/story/2016...ive-or-imagine
