Yup, I noted that too in the last part of my post here: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...y#post11749229

That’s a very legitimate question that many more (other than you) should be asking and getting all studios to go on record with the answer…rather than using the convenient generic term ‘filmmaker’ as to whom oversaw the HDR re-grade of these and future HDR iterations.

And sometimes not even "filmmaker" but "delegate". Jimmy the intern's gonna be so pleased to get out of the office for more than just a coffee run.

Of course, in terms of HDR, I think most consumers here would be satisfied as an alternative to having to rebuild the whole dang movie…..is simply (and more economically ) to re-grade thee archived 16-bit P3 theatrical master as I outlined here to Stacey….https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...r#post11071017 , if of course, the studio had the foresight to produce such a master in the first place.

The thing I like most about your communication with James is that Fox is one studio which is being Ultra HD Blu-ray proactive….rather than other's marketing people sitting on the sidelines in relative silence compared to James.
Yep that's me with my nephew, no kids here which means I can use whatever money I please on home theater :P

I'm really waiting on the other studios to discuss how their uhd movies are being remastered. Obviously we have to hope they have good intentions to produce the best product possible which would mean using as much raw content as possible.

In general, he was talking about Skyfall and Sicario but the statement was all about HDR and how it makes films look "unnatural" unless the cinematographer is involved

Has he done or will be doing an HDR regrade of Skyfall then?

I agree with the other posters. The HDR re-grading should be done by the cinematographer alongside the director if possible in my opinion (or with the Director's approval). I imagine that would cost quite a lot of money though.

Would be interesting to hear any commentary from Finn (or someone else) at Fox regarding catalog titles and this process. Heck, since Fox is so out in front on HDR, I'd love to hear/see them sponsor a panel discussion of DPs and directors discussing the pros and cons. At Fox, I'm thinking of titles like everything from Die Hard to Cast Away.

I think alot of that stuff will happen at some point this year after the launch and after people get a good chance to soak in the new format. Theres going to be alot of questions. and i wouldnt worry because the people who do the reviews will be wanting to have Q&A about what we are now (in a few months) seeing on screen.

New Article With 4k Ultra HD Hands on Experience from CES, very detailed.

The articles just keep coming with people from CES gushing about 4k blu ray players.

Heres a great in-depth article with a ton of good information.

SUMMARY:

-Paramount is already quietly preparing titles for announcement in the months ahead

- "virtually every single display manufacturer at CES told me that they plan to eventually stop making regular 1080p-only displays."

- "Based on my conversations with the various display manufacturers at CES, all of them are currently choosing to focus on 4K rather than 3D, as 1080p 3D really never took off widely with consumers."

- "one thing that’s surprised me is how much more “ready” the format is at launch that Blu-ray Disc was."

- "The way HDR will work on Ultra HD Blu-ray is that the player will handshake with your display, figure out what form of HDR it’s compatible with, and deliver the best HDR experience your TV can handle – HDR10 at minimum and better if possible."

- " What all of this means is that, even though UHD BD officially launches as a format in Feb/March, the real product and marketing push isn’t expected until the 4th Quarter of 2016, naturally in time for the holidays."

-"The first thing I have to say is that I’m a lot more excited about Ultra HD Blu-ray than I expected to be, and certainly more than I was just a few weeks ago. I’ve now had the chance to see demonstrations of a number of films in 4K UHD BD with High Dynamic Range (HDR), including both new and catalog films (even a few personal favorite titles), and I will tell you that the experience of seeing a film you love in Ultra High Definition with HDR is both striking and thrilling."

"-There’s one other thing I understand better about Ultra HD Blu-ray from firsthand experience at CES: You might not think you want it now… but the first time you see one of your favorite films on UHD Blu-ray in that level of quality, you may find yourself changing your tune. Remember, you don’t have to upgrade all your movies to UHD – all your existing BD and DVD discs will work fine on that new player. But trust me, the moment you get your first glance of Mad Max: Fury Road, The Godfather, or Lawrence of Arabia in 4K with HDR… your heart is going to skip a beat. And that’s no small thing."
