Indeed. I don't get why he'd be so surprised that UHD Blu is ready to rumble though, it's NOT some amazing newly minted format but more of an extension to the existing system, right down to the use of 33GB layers. If the BDA had managed to **** up UHD Blu's operability out of the gate then there really was no hope for it!

I apparently don't understand the process, as this is the second time you've responded thusly to my mention of a catalog title as though the timing being done precludes any tinkering (good or bad).
Is it not possible for the original negative to get scanned and graded for HDR--perhaps with Jan de Bont's participation--and achieve results different (better? worse?) than we've grown accustomed to? |

Are you gonna be changing your TV for an HDR WCG model then? You might have already done so, I dunno. Others will not be as fortunate so it'd be nice to know just what, if any, benefit will be forthcoming for an SDR 4K TV. *Geoff hears dat tiny violin playing*

Speaking of hdr, over at AVS we have our very 1st vizio reference series owner as he took his scheduled delivery today. Early impressions are extremely good. He purchased 3 dolby vision movies from Vudu and was absolutely floored with his 1st hdr experience ( gee, sounds like something others have said).
He previously owned the lg oled ef9500. The hdr was so impressive on the vizio that he even says that nothing he seen on the oled is as good as the vudu hdr on the vizio. The vizio has 384 zones and a current world record of 85-90% of the rec2020 color space. So call it a "super lcd". Exciting times ![]() |

Could it have had an HDR pass then? Sure Could Jan have done it? Maybe Do I think HDR was added after by a machine? More than likely |

No, but there are still benefits. Not to mention building a library and when I get a HDR set I can watch my favorites all over again anew. I built up my 3D library for quite a while before I was able to take advantage of it. |

Do you use the 3D on the TV? It alternates between awesome and awful (as Sony's active 3D implementation has always done) so I've given up on it.
And we've yet to see how effective the SDR conversion is, whether that causes any undue artefacts itself (never mind whether it's accurate to what the separate SDR grade actually looks like) so any benefits that do squeak through might be negated by other aspects of the downconversion. |

Whenever a new release is available in 3D (that I want) I do, latest being The Walk. 3D seems no better/worse than it did theatrically - depends on the 3D itself I guess which can vary between productions. Quote:
Vudu HDR is Dolby Vision and since it isn't widely available, those who have watched it in 4K "downconverted" haven't reported any issues. |

Oh, sorry, it's not the 3D effect itself - of course it varies between movies - it's the crosstalk I can't stand. Yeah, I've seen crosstalk theatrically as well but nothing as severe as what the TV serves up. YMMV.
As for the Vudu magic, do we know how DV has been deployed on those streams? If it's separate SDR and HDR layers then that doesn't tell us a thing about how the UHD Blu downconversion will work ('cause it doesn't use an SDR layer), and even if it's a single layer stream for Vudu Dolby have their own metadata generating system separate from the CRI conversion that will probably be used for HDR10 so again, doesn't really tell me much. So when you said Die Hard is already done, it's seeming like that is based upon some inside baseball knowledge . . .? And that you don't necessarily have any way of knowing whether the title could very well have been remastered more contemporarily with an HDR UHD BD in mind. I'd like to think that even Fox would have re-released such a popular title if a new master was created over three years ago. That original BD dates back to 2007.

If this is timed to the release prints it will look miles better already, but my "guess" is they got the new master and added HDR to it. It was made before the new HDR phase. The new version is on Mgo now if you have access and its in 4k and HDR. I know what the release prints looks like on this one, so its going to be one of my super critical ones |
