I don't think it is hard, and let's not forget this is just a rumour at this point, but everything does cost money. So if it is not a feature that will help drive sales what use is it to drive up their manufacturing cost for nothing?

According to another discussion on another forum, the PS3 had 2 lenses to read discs. One which read CDs/DVDs and another one for BDs. From that we could conclude that they removed CD playback so as to stop paying royalties and not to save money on hardware (unless they made a new lens whch reads DVDs+BDs), which again is weird cause they co-developed the CD with Philips and the technology is more than 30 years old. It's baffling but, at the same time, not enough to fuss over.

*Take all of the above with a grain of salt*

AND IT IS OFFICIAL (it's been known for some days now)

either one or the other, does it matter? Royalties would be paid depending on the numbers of units so it is still a manufacturing cost, I never said HW. I don't know what the difference is, I was just pointing out the obvious that if there is an additional cost to them and it does not affect anything, it makes sense to drop it and save on those costs. Consoles (except for Nintendo) are usually sold at a loss in the first few years (if not the whole generation) so any savings make sense.

I still listen to music CD's through my PS3. As i'm sure many did too. I've never bought a SACD before. The reason i think it's dumb is because sony supported it since the beginning and now to remove it makes no sense to me. How much does it cost them to have it? Not alot i bet. It's going to funny when you can still play CD's on MS's next system. That just seems......wrong.

It seems the real reason they took it out is because you can no longer play PS1 games, which used CD's. They want everything in the cloud. And it's not going to be free.

I didn’t watch the event. If thee presenters didn’t mention 4K, then the intention was to keep the focus on gamer types and gamer things… and 4K games are difficult to do, so I guess no speak-ee of 4K on that particular stage/venue.

I'm not sure what has been discussed in here. Usually posts are flowing in here so it's hard to keep up to date with everything.

The PS4 won't do games in 4K but it does support 4K output for videos and pictures. We've yet to see how this will be implemented. 4K Blu-ray is a dream by now but I guess they could use it to stream 4K or something like that.

Also, Penton please edit your posts. It's good forum etiquette.

Here's an interview with Shuhei Yoshida from sony confirming 4K for PS4. It's in japanese so i had to use google translate-

Quote:
While it is possible the output of 4K video, game non-4K
--- I will not be announced for the response to the 4K2K display in recital by the way

Yoshida: personal content such as photos and videos, which supports output at 4K2K, in the game it is not supported.

--- Bandwidth and memory resources to use if you think that trying to make a game in 4K2K but become quite severe indeed, in the position similar to the Full HD mode on PS3, Gran Turismo I for example? Will not be available as a screen mode Do you want to watch and there is a need, such as those at 4K2K, was photographed in a virtual?

So that you can not use the 4K2K from the game: Yoshida.

--- This spring, Sony will start in North America a video distribution service 4K2K, these services are not it is able to connect.

Yeah the event was catered to developers and gamers. It was sony's first time talking about the PS4 so i just expected way more details about everything, not just 4K. I guess they can't reveal too much since MS is watching HARD!

maybe you did but I doubt the many part. Maybe I am wrong but everyone I know that use CDs have CD players for them. I just don't see it as an issue. I could have seen someone in 2006 or 2007 buying a PS3 because it had Bd playback since back then BD players were rare and expensive, but how many people do you think will decide on a console based on CD playback. My guess 99% of the people that have PS3s did not even know they could play CDs, let alone tried one on them.

I don't know if MS will support CD or not, as for cost, like I said with Lnds500 since machines are usually sold at a loss or breaking even, every cent saved counts for a lot. I don't think it is much, but it does not really matter if there are savings.

I don't see the relation, you can't play PS2 games while there is a DVD drive and you can't play PS3 games while there is a BD drive, why would they remove CD just to say "you can't play PS1 games". As for it not being free, I agree, on the other hand I am wondering if it might not be part of one of the PSN packages (i.e. like PS+), I could not find any pricing info on Gaikai but onlive has a 10$ a month "playpack"

But I think we moved very far away from tyhe topic of this thread

Yes, the fact that a competitor is scrutinizing the situation is one contributing factor to being not as forthcoming as possible, but also, you have to realize how marketers think, i.e. after a Press event, what can we save for E3…after E3 what can we save for CES, etc.

You should know the game by now. Many entertainment-oriented companies purposely avoid giving out details, or do so in a piece meal fashion in order to keep *the internet speculation/hype machine* going for as long as possible.

The truly astute analysts amongst you out there will beat them to the punch and win the game by accurately predicting things before any ‘official’ announcements.

At this stage in the game, I'm not sure MS is in a position to make any SUBSTANTIVE changes b4 holiday 2013. As far as games in 4K, I've been scouring the net for awhile regarding that. Haven't seen a major developer even so much as comment on it. 4K res in games to go w/ a display would be just phenomenal. I wouldn't expect to see it 'til the console's been out at least a couple of years.

Especially considering the living room media centre push of recent consoles. Maybe there is going to be a iTunes equivalent for the ps3 in terms of music?

Sap, I’m not much for this particular network news outlet but nevertheless, the Presidential level taking the 4K word to the non-gamer masses this past Thursday demonstrates the commitment to the 4K mission … http://video.foxnews.com/v/218082397...d=931078471001

My only question is whether or not the phrase “broadcast injuries” by the interviewer was a pun or some kind of Freudian slip.

After last night’s Academy Awards show, just wondering …https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ar#post5716925

if I should go back and edit by bolding the words ‘pure cinematography’, ‘VFX’, ‘Directing' in the post referenced and linked to in the second paragraph here…

Between Sugar and Pi, it sure was a sweet night.
