because at the time IMAX implementing digital technology, 2K was the only option, the use of Sony 4K wasn't acceptable. Now with TI 4K DLP chips, higher resolution can be achieved, newer projector's also have higher light output for larger screens. Under the current time line, Kodak and IMAX are phasing out all the 15/70 screens starting around Spring of next year - this is unfortunate because 70mm horizontal IMAX stock, I feel looks superior to digital capture.

nope, but I'm not sure how this is being weeded out since Kodak recently filed for bankruptcy

The only 70mm imax left in NY is the AMC Loews Lincoln Square. The regal theater i use to go to sinced it opened in 1999 has switched to digital. All the rest of the original 15/70 are museums.

Man that sucks!!!!!! Why do good things never last? Shit always prevails.

Guess i'll be going to the AMC imax. Until thats changed to digital too.

yeah apparently the IMAX documentaries in museums just don't cut it - the Hollywood features bring in the crowds -

even though the Smithsonian occasionally books the random 'Hollywood' IMAX fodder, the film booker who I have had emailed conversations regarding this, still maintains that the need and mission of the museums to provide content and film's that compliment the Smithsonian's goal to educate museum goers that IMAX doc's provide.

sorry to be digressing from the original topic but here's some more brand new news regarding Kodak IMAX deal:

For the IMAX Corporation, the future is brighter, larger and in 3-D.

The company is developing prototypes of new laser technologies that will allow for drastically larger and brighter screens by 2013.

“We have purchased the rights to parts of 10,000 patents from Kodak that will throw much more light on screens than you see today,” said Richard L. Gelfond, IMAX’s chief executive, in an interview at Documented@Davos, an event held by Scribd and Mashable. “We have developed cameras that are filming the screen and giving real-time feedback to the projectors to optimize the experience.”

Today’s IMAX screen sizes span 80 to 90 feet. The new technology is expected to widen the screens to 140 feet.

Mr. Gelfond said IMAX engineers had been experimenting with futuristic applications for theatrical, live sports and musical events.

Sorry to continue off topic but i called my regal theater and they said they will be bringing back the 70mm projection for the dark night rises. I asked are they going to be doing this everytime a film is shot in imax he said yes.

So why get rid of it in the first place? I know its money, as he said, but still.

I don't like it either.

I don't hate digital. It has its place. I just prefer the organic look of film. Digital can never replicate that look and feel.

btw all this Xk vs Yk vs film vs digital, remember, the resolution recorded on the negative is never seen on film projection. I think 1080p on direct view can take on VistaVision if done correctly. VV projection that is.

Duping, vibration, focus, lens can make a big film k into a little k.
on direct digital -> digital panel those are bypassed

Ditto! Certain theatrical presentations, just can't be emulated for the home theater market like an IMAX feature. It will never be!

Yeah I know digital IMAX in the past has used two double stacked 2k resolution Christie DLP projectors. I read some literature that claims this produces a 4k resolution 2D image but I don't know how their proprietary technology would do this. Maybe its kinda like JVC's E-shift or some kind of wobulation.

I welcome 4K for the home and most theaters but ditching 15/70mm for 4K on a five story traditional IMAX screen seems like a crime. If they scrap out all of the 15/70mm completely it will be a sad sad day.

two 2K projector's do not produce true 4K resolution despite the math.

the conversion of the 15/70 screens will be implementing the new IMAX/Kodak/Barco laser technology - no specs on 4K resolution, but since the Barco DP systems use 4K DLP chips there no reason why the IMAX/Barco laser projectors wouldn't be the same.

The AMC lincoln square IMAX in New York will be keeping the 70mm projection i was told.

I've never been there. I always went to regal cinema. Looks like i'll be going to AMC from now on.

Is this why bluray looks better than the theater sometimes?

I think i sparked a discussion in pentons thread about this awhile back.
