Seems like it's a necessity for Eclair since they will be providing HDR on a wide range of cinema display technologies: their current Sony projectors, the Samsung Onyx LED, and the new Cinionic/Barco Vision 2020 laser.

Can anyone weigh in on this note about LEDs and strobing?

The HDR evaluation working group of the American Society of Cinematographers Motion Imaging Technology Council also weighed in on LED cinema screens during the event. Seeming to address concerns of some filmmakers, the ASC Council's Thomas Wall said, "This doesn't look like signage; this looks like cinema."

"But there are problems," he added, citing several examples, including that the group found that strobing is "very noticeable when there are high contrast images. ... Cinematographers need to think about these things if they are shooting for HDR."

It plays into what Penton has been mentioning on and off for a good long while: with greater dynamic range comes greater strobing with conventional 24fps playback, becoming ever more noticeable as the screens increase in size - it's certainly something I had to get used to on my ZD9. One wonders what refresh rate the cinema LED screens actually run at, conventional 24p digital cinema runs at 48Hz or 72Hz (mimicking the double or triple-bladed shutters of yore) but with these being giant TV screens are they 120Hz or something? We saw the same concerns over some 8K demo or other that people were dribbling over recently too, there's a reason why High Frame Rate is a big part of the next phase of UHD: it's not just for the sake of it, as it may well become a necessity with certain content.

for now, the Samsung Onyx LED can playback up to 60p, 120p is planned for later.
Sony should have an invite event to their Digital Media Production center in Glendale with their Crystal LED installed to discuss its capabilities to content creators.

Does this mean all future 4K films are going to lose the ‘film’ look? I bloody hope not. I can cope with sport but not much else.

If we end up with giant LED screens in all cinemas then it may come to pass that the frame rate goes up along with it, but for now I wouldn't worry about it.
