Ah hahhahhahhahhah!!! This is as big a joke as Thinner Thx certified DVD. Unless it is a full digital DOWNLOAD, how can that ever compare to uhd blu Ray with lossless audio. I guess maybe if you had a very fat pipe and was in the same block as the hosting server.

Pay premium prices on hardware for streaming titles.

So will you have to buy the film twice for Imax? Or will it just be different versions depending on the streaming service?

That doesn’t say it will be streaming only though.

That's true. They have already released a 4K UHD disc of Venom. It's been such a "huge" seller, and so critically acclaimed, that they are bound to pull a "Martian" and release a second one with an IMAX Enhanced disc of this down the road. I'll wait for that one....but I won't hold my breath...

The likelihood of it being rereleased is up in the air, just pointing out there’s no official confirmation one way or the other so that people who didn’t bother to read the article linked are aware of that.

I just read that Sony has new IMAX Enhanced tv's which will access Privilege 4K which is an IMAX Enhanced streaming service. Am I reading correct that they will have their own streaming service?

Excerpt below:

Sony also expanded Netflix Calibrated Mode to more TVs and launched its latest IMAX Enhanced TVs, which access the new “Privilege 4K” IMAX Enhanced streaming service due in the spring. The service promises “a blockbuster selection” that includes Venom from Sony Pictures, Sony said. In a related announcement, IMAX said three other streaming services — Tencent Video in China, FandangoNOW in the U.S., and Rakuten TV in Europe — will stream IMAX Enhanced content to IMAX-certified devices. The content will join IMAX Enhanced content already available on select 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs.

Edit:Sorry, I just read the engadget story posted on top of this page.

So many questions, so few answers. Again the marketing around IMAX Enhanced is just bad.

I haven't bought Venom on UHD BD for that reason, I'd like to check how those IMAX-enhanced discs look and sound and I'll be taking my chances with Venom.
I think the current UHD BD of Venom looks great so if the IMAX Enhanced UHD BD turns out looking worse I'll only waste around 20to 30 $ and I'd be done with IMAX.

If TCL is part of this, would older sets get updated? I ask because the Living room TV (Not Mine) is a TCL, and they seemed very keen on updating older Tech (If it meets the requirements) for newer specs.

If only Sony had gotten IMAX and DTS to do this earlier eh?

Like Magnavox marketing Magnavision (later called LaserDisc) bad? Or DTS marketing DTS:X (Huh, wait. *Sees DTS involved* WHAT?) bad?

All IMAX Enhanced does for TV's is add a custom tone mapping algorithmic curve and potential settings overrides for IMAX flagged content that may or may not be to your liking.

It's already been shown to override certain calibration settings in IMAX updated flagship receivers and pre-amps from Denon & Marantz to artificially boost bass output. Louder doesn't always mean better - why couldn't IMAX and DTS remix their audio tracks beforehand if they wanted to goose bass frequencies?

Xperi, the parent company behind DTS, and IMAX announced at CES 2019 that the IMAX Enhanced program announced in September is gaining momentum. The program combines hardware and digitally re-mastered 4K HDR content for a new standard in high-end home theater.
IMAX Enhanced is a four-fold experience using proprietary post-production techniques to digitally remaster video and audio. Images are enhanced to be brighter and clearer. Sound is created using a special variant of the DTS:X codec for a “signature” IMAX sound. Scale is increased to the IMAX aspect ratio; only the largest 4K displays will be labeled IMAX Enhanced. The last part of IMAX Enhanced is content; premium content will be remastered and certified by IMAX.

IMAX is using content from its own library, but new titles can also be submitted for the intensive enhancement program.

Currently, three companies in the world are signed on to stream IMAX Enhanced content: Tencent Video (China), FandangoNOW (U.S.), and Rakuten TV (Europe). Privilege 4K will begin streaming IMAX Enhanced content to select Sony BRAVIA TVs later in 2019.

At the show IMAX and DTS announced and demonstrated (WOW!) first IMAX Enhanced titles from Sony Home Pictures to be streamed and released on Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc: Venom and Alpha. The movies are two of 15 IMAX Enhanced titles confirmed for launch in 2019. They follow the December 2018 4K/Ultra HD Blu-ray release of the IMAX documentaries “Journey to the South Pacific” and “A Beautiful Planet.”

IMAX Enhanced hardware partners include Arcam, Elite, Integra, Lexicon, Onkyo, Pioneer, TCL and Trinnov along with Sony Electronics and Sound United brands, Denon and Marantz. Arcam, Elite, Integra, Lexicon, Onkyo, Pioneer and Trinnov will offer IMAX Enhanced-certified AV receivers and TCL will debut IMAX Enhanced-certified televisions in select regions beginning in 2019.

“We’re encouraged by the significant momentum and high-caliber partners that are embracing the IMAX Enhanced program in just the first few months of its launch,” said IMAX CFO and Head of Corporate Strategy & Development Patrick McClymont. “These premium partners and the blockbuster titles announced today extend our product and content offering and advance our efforts to deliver the best at-home entertainment experiences to more consumers around the world.”

Xperi EVP and Chief Products and Services Officer Geir Skaaden added: “We are pleased to announce the growth of the IMAX Enhanced ecosystem with leading studios, streaming services, and device partners who share our vision of raising the bar for home entertainment by delivering the highest quality content to premium devices.”

As engaging as IMAX films are in the theater, it is incredibly exciting to be able to have a similar experience in the home. We’ll keep you posted as more content and hardware are certified and created to be IMAX Enhanced
