Paid,

Just curious, what is the rationale that says 'Ghostbusters' does not make a great HD showcase, but 'A Few Good Men' does?

My logic circuits are clearly not functioning properley because I would have said that Ghostbusters would be a great Blu-ray showcase.

I know this is coming out of left field, but is the movie "My Science Poject" anywhere on the Bluray radar?? (Buena Vista/Anchor Bay Entertainment)

...just wondering, thanks! (Im sure its not, but maybe put in a vote!)

If you scroll back through this thread you'll notice that something to that effect has already been said. The only difference is that unlike Microsoft, Sony doesn't announce release dates for firmware updates like that - it'll come out when it's ready and not before.

I do have a related question though - are there any 1.1 compliant discs in the works right now? I would love to see that Matrix set in all its glory (well okay I only want the first movie, but still) for the holidays.

Any truth in this? or just FUD tactics
Sorry gandley, I personally can’t provide any insight.

I couldn’t tell you one way or another as I travel in the studio circle rather than the consumer electronics device circle. My only connection(s) to consumer electronics is Sony electronics and that’s on the level of the grand scheme of things like with the recent Target announcement. In addition, I’m not in the business of tracking down the merit of every rumor posted by an HD VD insider, fanboy or whatever.

Plus when I found out that Amir M. was speaking at CEDIA on behalf of AVS, I just sort of lost interest in that whole show altogether.

Other than that, I just want to thank you, Paid, Talkstr8t for your time and dedication here and putting up with the FUD on AVS. Thank you all.
I’m lucky.
They’re both beautiful 100% female living organisms and probably the best word to describe each of them is……….*vigorous*.

In fact, I know that I’ve introduced both to paidgeek, sometime in the past, and if memory serves me, I believe that when he saw each of them his jaw dropped with envy and he was speechless.

The downside is………….. both are high maintenance.

Believe me, he prefers to remain anonymous as he would never want someone like an unaccredited Micro$oft journalist hound him over the internet.

I’ll see if I can bring back any info I can share. I’ll tell you right now, don’t plan on much…………. because if we talk film, I expect him to mostly tease me as to what cut of Across the Universe the public will be seeing in the upcoming theatrical presentation to hit theaters in Sept.

In fact, don’t plan on anything, that way, nobody here will be disappointed if I return empty handed. But, I’ll see if I can bring back a doggie bag with even the tinniest of bones for some to chew on.

I'm back and probably 2 pounds heavier.

Expect there to be a title (non-Sony) which will be streeting in a couple of weeks or so, that will not solely represent an example of the superior technical merits of Blu-ray, in regards to seamless branching, but the open-mindedness for Blu-ray to start strutting its technologically superior stuff to consumers.

Granted it may appear to be a tiny bone for you guys to chew on, but something……anything in the nick of time that is positive given the recent bad Paramount deci$ion, I suspect will be welcome and appreciated by the Blu-ray faithful.

Later.
P.S.
I can't elaborate any more.

The first trailer I saw made me want to see this film. The second drove me away.

Can we expect any type of big announcement this week as beatboy77 alluded to at the beginning of last week?

If that's as bad as it gets I'll take it.

What I want to know is if the BDA envisioned HD-DVD being so aggressive this Q4, and have counter announcements waiting in the wings, or have they been taken by complete surprise?

HD-DVD are still the underdog, I don't see why all forthcoming announcements should be pro HD-DVD.

Hey, cool, I'd love to hear about AtU. Being a child of the 60's, the trailer really caught my interest. I wondered why it seemed like there was such a long delay between the trailer and the release. So, inside information on this film is equally appreciated.

Thanks!

Penton,

Would this be in regards to Natures Journey releasing in two weeks? We know that it is using separate encodes optimized for both formats, with bit-rate being maxed for both on VC-1. I'm assuming you saw the comparison between both and something tells me Blu-ray's encode was better -- much better.

Paid,

I was thinking of a film today that I hadn't seen in a while... and while it's not a blockbuster, I was curious as to whether any work is being done on it. The movie in question is "Les Miserables" with Liam Neeson and Geoffrey Rush from Sony back in 1998? I believe it was shown on HDNet Movies several years ago...

Can any Insider shed more light on this?

Mitsubishi planning 3D Blu-ray player for early 2008

Mitsubishi's trying to bring 3D to the home.
(Credit: news.com.au)

Along with a few other tech journalists, I spent a couple of hours today over at the Westchester Country Club, which is gearing up for The Barclays PGA Tour event. What the hell was I doing there? Well, as part of a marketing deal with the PGA Tour, Mitsubishi is the "official large outdoor video display provider" of the Tour, and the PR team wanted us to see some of these displays in action--along with the Tour's ShotLink technology, which tracks players' shots almost down to the centimeter (the info is then displayed on those giant Mitsubishi scoreboards). That's all sorts of interesting if you're a golf fan, but things got a little sexier when Mitsubishi representatives took us into a hospitality suite, handed us each a pair of fancy 3D glasses (a little smaller than the ones shown in the photo), and showed us a demo of some new 3D-imaging technology the company's working on.

The demo was run from a massive Dell desktop and output onto a large DLP set. In an effort to inject new life into the fading rear-projection category, the company's pitch was that the 3D technology worked with existing DLP TVs and projectors (due to DLP's native 120Hz refresh rate, which allows you to split it into 60/60 for 3D) but not with LCD and plasma displays.

Most of us were pretty impressed by the demo, which included clips from movies, commercials, and sporting events. There was real depth to the 3D, and you got that 3D-feeling of objects poking out at you from the screen. All the demo material had been shot in 3D, but the kicker to the whole presentation was that Mitsubishi apparently has a Blu-ray player in its labs that can convert existing 2D movies into 3D on the fly. Better yet, according to company representatives, it may be available early next year.

I'm pretty skeptical that the technology is going to show up anytime soon, and I have my doubts that converted 2D content is going to look all that great in 3D. But the 3D movement is gathering more momentum, as other companies such as Samsung and Philips continue working on ways to bring 3D into the home. Ideally, you wouldn't have to wear glasses (Philips is trying to integrate 3D right into the display), but I have a feeling you're only going to get a true Imax-like 3D experience with some eyewear.

While Mitsubishi wasn't ready to talk pricing, one would expect to pay a premium for a special-featured Blu-ray player. That said, Mitsubishi hinted that it was in discussions with one game console manufacturer to integrate its 3D technology into the system. The Wii's not capable of such feats, and Microsoft's in the HD DVD camp, so one would have to assume it's Sony and the PS3.

I know, I know. It's all rampant conjecture. But eventually, HD and 2D just aren't going to cut it. We may be a few years away, but there's chatter out there. Anybody out there itching for 3D at home?

That was a bit of a sticky wicket.
A quite anomalous situation in fact.

So, I’ll have to pass on your request.

Shucks! I'm a big fan of Julie Taymor's work, so I too was hoping to hear something. Besides what a mess things have become...

Thanks for posting here, Penton-Man! Your comments and insights are appreciated.

Like I said earlier, I read alot into what you say. Are you saying that the post you made about the movie Across The Universe really had nothing to do with the movie Across The Universe? This is what I was HOPING was going on, but wasnt sure.

All the posts I made regarding Across the Universe were solely in reference to the upcoming theatrical presentation in Sept.
There is no connection to Universal Studios, if that’s what you’re implying in regards to things in the works, upcoming news or what not………sorry.

It simply was a coincidence of terms. Plus, I generally like to bold the title of any movies or books (if I remember to).

And yes, the studio colleague did in fact tease me about which cut the public would be seeing this Sept.(there has been a bit of a controversy about that….. for those of you unfamiliar with the motion picture) and I have actually received several PM’s inquiring about it, which I am not at liberty to disclose.
