I received some PM’s over the weekend as to whether I know and could reveal a rough timeframe for the debut of some Tarantino titles: Kill Bill Vol.1, Kill Bill Vol. 2 and Pulp Fiction because apparently one or all are on a preorder status from some retailer.
Ans. – No, I don’t know when these titles will debut on Blu-ray. However, for those hypersensitive to DNR, I will tell you right now that a tad of DNR was applied to the film master of Kill Bill Vol.1 in order to make the grain look consistent from scene to scene as multiple film stocks were used. So, since it’s on the film master, it will be on any video masters floating out and about and inevitably will be on the Blu-ray edition. I don’t know if any eagle eyes will perceive it, much less complain about it however, if the whining begins with the inevitable blame game to follow, do not blame the Blu-ray encoding/authoring team as this was applied way further on upstream. Some people that are not immersed in the storyline of the film may catch the processing on a few scenes. |

Do not resuscitate? NOOOOOO... Wait, I mean Digital Noise Reduction NOOOOOOO!!!!
Obviously, I'm kidding. Given the scenario you describe, I'm guessing that the most utmost care was taken while making the transfer. DNR doesn't make me cringe on live action movies nearly as much as it does when used on animated ones. Especially when the person(s) doing the work fall asleep at the wheel. (The Tex Avery Droopy set is a prime example.) As an aside, how does one NOT get engrossed into a Tarantino film? Probably the ones that get bored during a Hitchcock film. As for certain places having Blu-Rays on preorder, I'm wanting "This Is Spinal Tap" that they have online. And before anyone says anything, we all know that your home theater setup goes to 11. TAG |

Hello Penton,
I personally can't wait for Kill Bill 1&2 and Pulp Fiction to debut on Blu-ray. In the meantime, I almost expected to hear about release dates for Men in Black and Sin City by now (esp since MIB was highlighted at CES). Any idea what's up with these titles? |

Considering there have been articles on how studios are looking at 3D for the theatres I think it important to get 3D done right (one formal spec, then many incompatible specs) from the get go. I also think the best way is to do it with the second decoder, (a left and a right encode on the disk) because then the disk becomes irrelevant to the viewing tech (what I mean is hat if there are two 1080p encodes -like PiP- that can play simultaneously then like PiP a non-3d player just shows one, someone with a 120hz 3D displays can buy a player that interlaces the two streams and sends out in a way those TVs can use while someone that wants a two projector system (or a display with a dual HDMI input for 3D) would buy a player with a left HDMI and right HDMI output. Not to mention every other existing or possible 3D display tech) |

Please put all 3D questions in the "to 3D or not 3D" section
Studios are very well aware of the desire for quality 3D, and even more aware of the limited number of sets that can actually support this in homes, and the fact that they also have a new thing to draw people to theaters that they don't want to duplicate at home too quickly Personally wouldn't expect any 3-D releases outside of a token handful for 5 years at least |

I received a PM concerning Lawrence of Arabia from a post on AVS by a former insider from a formerly red company……namely Amir…………
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showp...postcount=1602 Please, no more PM’s to me concerning the barbecue dude! https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=1458 Whose words will be forever immortalized in granite, thanks to Jeff…….. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showpost.p...postcount=1136 Geez, he even spun his own “retirement” on the *other forum*. But I digress as I’m on vacation this week and presently waiting for my better half to make sandwiches for a day trip we’re about to embark on. In regards to the comment that he made concerning LoA, the event that Amir is referring to, I believe was the first “All Things Digital” conference….. and the projector could not support full 1080p. It was a mistake to attempt a split screen of any kind at that venue, but WSJ would not allow a separate projector set-up. Nuff said. I’m going to ignore the perceived LoA *issues* for the time being since they are based on cable/satellite distributed content, not Blu-ray; however, I will add a little perspective concerning tests/demonstrations that are of public record. Granted this test involved a 35mm source; however, it utilized the original camera negative which was virgin and pristine. LoA is 65mm but, the usable “source” is an I/P (interpositive) which is significantly less detailed than the 65mm original negative in terms of resolution as the result of predicated generational loss. In fact, some sections of the I/P originate from duped elements rather than the OCN, which causes even further generational loss in resolution. In other words, the resolution of the *usable* film element of LoA aint no 6K, no way. Anyway, at the ETC’s DCL there was a 2K vs 4K digital shootout a couple years back. The 35mm original negative (virgin and pristine) source was scanned on a Northlight scanner at 6K resolution making 16-bit Tiff files. The 6K master was subsequently down-resolved (with minimal filtering) to 4K and 2K versions, and eventually shown on a Sony 4K SRX-R110 projector during a split screen demonstration with a Christie CP2000 which is a professional 2K digital projector. The audience included ASC projection sub-committee members, DP’s, CTO’s, tech-geeks, outside consultants and other industry folk with a keen eye. The vast majority of the audience did not see any increased detail at all from the 4K projector images compared to those from the 2K projector. This has been published and you can find it if you know where to look. Now granted, the screen was only 20 ft. wide, so I imagine some home theater enthusiasts (with more experience than the audience members described above) might see some increased detail if they performed this same test at home using their more sophisticated projectors showing the same content on their larger screens. |

Personally, I’m just ecstatic that they are releasing Sand Pebbles around D-Day because Steve McQueen was one of my motorcycle racing he-roes (On Any Sunday) and the fact that the audio restoration needed (and performed by a professional in Santa Monica) was indeed monumental. ![]() |
