Question: When I set my 4K player to 1080p resolution and play a UHD disc, movie plays like a regular bluray (no HDR picture), but is it playing in fact at 1080p or is it still a 2160p minus HDR that I am looking at?

Stay away from Geostorm. Even in HDR. It should be named Shitstorm. And that fulfills my court ordered public service.

I have a dirt bike now but I didn't get to ride last summer and I only got to ride once this year.

BUT, I just bought another bike this week. An 05 BMW GS1200 with lots of trimmings. That way I get to ride to work and if I get the itch to go up into our beautiful mountains, the bike will be more than capable. Washington has so many great logging and forest service roads that I am hoping it will get me out more. Not nearly as fun as the gnarly trails I'm used to riding, but it's something!

Nice. I sold my 1200GS awhile ago. I have a BMW S1000XR now, as my riding tends to be far more concrete than anything that I would need the GS for.

If I get down to CEDIA 2018 and this year I’m not overwhelmed with business commitments, mountain bike riding in the Laguna Mountains, family entertaining and 2…yes, 2 weddings/receptions that week, I’ll have to pull you away from Darin et al. get a rental bicycle for you on Coronado island and we can ride the bayshore bikeway down and back, which as you probably already know passes the U.S. Naval Amphibious Base where Navy SEALs train..the real Seals, not those in TV shows.

It's a nice leisurely ride with soothing scenery.

I think most of us non-industry folks would like to hear that too. Do they use waveforms or have some kind of 'out of range' crosshatching on the monitors to keep track of highlights that exceed the mastering display, just like how some mastering displays show colour that's out of range of the set's native gamut? I've read that the BVMX300 has a warning light when the ABL kicks in, for example.

Although plans for our 2018 TV Shootout are in full swing; the breaking news I was referring to is related to industry insider information. I'm hoping to be able to break the news on Blu-ray.com by Friday or early next week.

How do you label a movie that has been selectively rendered at mixed resolution, only utilizing native 4k where it really makes a difference?

I'd like to caution you that the mastering nits metric can be misleading. I get asked this question (or a similar one: what is the "maximum nits" of a movie) so many times, often by execs who just don't get it. You could master on a 4000 nits monitor but only utilize that full range in a handful of scenes. If only one pixel in one frame ever hits 4000 nits, does it matter? The majority of the movie (or possibly even all of the movie) could stay well under 1000 nits. That's largely why the mastering display metadata isn't particularly useful to televisions. You really want to know what are the intrinsic image characteristics. That's what dynamic metadata tries to capture, the range that is actually being utilized.

This is relevant to all dimensions of image quality: resolution, dynamic range, gamut… you can have all the technical capability in the world, but the filmmaker could still opt to make a movie that is low contrast, with heavy grain and a desaturated look to it. I worked on a movie many years ago where the DP finally got to shoot with high budget gear, but the director wanted it to feel like their previous movies, gritty and unpolished. After everything was shot the DP was fired, and the facility I was working at was tasked with making all this expensive 35mm footage look like it was 16mm. When people focus too much on specs it can be detrimental. It can result in expending technical resources that aren't necessary to achieve the creative goal on new movies, or push the look away from what it was creatively intended to be, especially a risk when remastering movies.

Unless Kris knows or talks to someone in the know, let the tweeters/reporters stew on it for awhile, racking their brains trying to figure it all out. For as you say…https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...d#post14639602

But of course (run Grey Poupon commercial from the 80’s).
We here at Blu-ray.com have a long proven history of doing that sort of thing since 2008, e.g. https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...e#post10089063

We’re all ears . I like cliffhangers. Just make it an exclusive.
