Just walked in from seeing this in Atmos at AMC. Well... they spelled Hellboy right. Seriously, it was very uneven. I'm a big fan of the comics and the Del Toro movies so I really wanted to like this movie but I can't honestly recommend it even to die hard Hellboy fans. In fairness it did have few very good moments but it was just to "all over the place" in tone and quality of effects. The villains main henchmen looked state of the art 15 years ago ( I'm being generous). The main villain was boring. Hellboy himself was good, I guess that's something. There was a cameo by a very popular HB protagonist that was excellent, I wouldn't mind seeing more of that character in the future.
Overall: Not recommended but your mileage may vary. I suggest see it at home or a very cheap matinee. |

I'm a huge fan of the first two Hellboy films ( even collect film cells and statues ) and I was not expecting much from this one. I'm also a reader and collector of the comic books.
Just my opinion, but... To my surprise, this was better than what people have been saying. It's a very gory, overly violent and atmospheric film. The scenes with Baba Yaga and her hut were fantastic. I was given the Hellboy ( art of the film ) book as a gift and I was surprised to see Perlman's version of the character within much of the artwork for this film. This would've been a great sequel to the first two if given half the chance. As for the performance of Hellboy, definitely not what we are used to..but honestly, the humor isn't much different than that of Perlman's version. Sure the face is uglier and he has hair on the top of his head...but so f'n what. If you are going into this expecting something perfect in terms of matching your expectations whether it be the previous two films or the comics, better check your expectations at the door. In other words...don't believe everything you read online. See it for yourself and decide with an open mind. |

It's like someone slammed SUICIDE SQUAD and THE LAST WITCH HUNTER together. I was hoping all of the negative reviews would temper/lower my expectations enough to enjoy this movie. But, nope. There were...7 people, in the auditorium I saw it in. 2 of them walked out about 25 mins in. I stayed for the whole thing, but kept peaking at the clock on my phone to see if it was at least close to over. It didn't feel like a Neil Marshall movie. And from what I'm reading regarding the production, it sounds like the version we got ISN'T a Neil Marshall movie. It 100% feels like a mish mash of different committee and studio exec/exec producer ideas all forced into a blender, without any concern for the final product. The story is just barely there enough for the movie to move on. The tone is all over the map, and nothing feels cohesive about the whole thing. None of it feels like it means anything, there are no surprises or layers. We get brief scenes of uneven story progression, with dialogue and exposition that ranges from "meh" to eye-rolling, groan worthy bad, and then it just jumps into more flashy, violent action scenes with so-so CGI. But, the action and graphic violence never feels fun. Or scary. Or thrilling. Or "heavy"/significant. Or in any way interesting really. It's just sort of "We asked a bunch of random 'edgy' 14 year olds what would make an awesome movie fight....and then we put it through the standard studio processor multiple times to still make it feel as lifeless as possible". At points, exposition feels almost like it's TRYING to insult the audience's intelligence. Milla can't act. She was good as/for Leelu in THE FIFTH ELEMENT when she just had to say 1-4 words at a time in an quirky, alien sort of way. Just like Vin Diesel is good for "Rock/Tree" and "I am Groot", but not much else. Her character only had 2 settings. Wet cardboard, and villain from the 2nd MORTAL KOMBAT movie. I will say, I was more than ok with Harbour as Big Red himself. The makeup was great as far as making him look/feel a little more comics accurate (underbite, narrower in the cheeks, wider in the forehead). He did the best he could given the mess of everything else around him. His delivery of most of his puns or snarky quips was pretty good. Unfortunately, because of the writing and dialogue, any scene he shares with other characters still fall flat. I am a huge Ian McShane fan. I didn't care about him as Prof. "Broom", I didn't care about he and Hellboy's relationship with each other. And, honestly, I didn't actually feel that he and Hellboy cared about each other to any degree either. I could go further into it, but, it would just be more ranting, and become even more of a word salad than I'm sure it already is. So, the bright points: - David Harbour did a solid job filling in the boots and horns of the big red ape. - There were some cool demon designs in the final act. They barely get any use, unfortunately, and the rest of that scene is still a mess. - Some other comics accurate bits, characters and locations. While I think the placement of his origin story felt awkward, the visual comic accuracy (including a character not even mentioned in the first movie) was very cool to see.
