Let me just say almost gave up on this after the seven minute mark,
[Show spoiler]the opening narration voice sounded way too forced and had me laughing at how overly serious it sounded plus seeing the minions regarded as 'american deities' was a bit too difficult for me to believe no matter how much I tried suspending it
but kept on watching and ended up enjoying it overall. To me the movie had a sort of b-movie charm going for it that I dug a lot and also the special effects were well done particularly enjoyed the final bit of action on the wall towards the end. I only rented the Blu-ray but want to check it out to see how it looks on 4K, want to wait for it to hit the $15 range though before getting it.

I watched this last night via Netflix rental so just Blu-ray. Looked and sounded great so I’m sure the UHD is reference material. The movie itself had potential but just sort of fell flat overall. Can’t put my finger on it. Just seemed forgettable. Glad I rented it and gave it a chance but I don’t see me watching it again so no go purchase in UHD.

For those that did like and will buy it, enjoy, I’m sure technically it’ll be a great UHD title for your library.

Returned my extra copy to Best Buy no problem, but the store I was at had something new to me. There were no 4k copies of any movie on the shelves. Instead, there were tags that basically said to see the front counter (or associate) to purchase 4k movies and steelbooks. I thought the cases were frustrating enough. However, if this means that do not have to put any in cases, thus limiting damage, then this may be a pretty smart idea! (I just hope they wouldn't mind somebody like me inspecting each copy before buying haha).

The fact that for steelbooks in particular the artwork and design is one of the big draws may count against this idea, but, as you say, if it stops/limits damage and helps protect what continue to be high budget items (relatively) from theft I can certainly see the logic.

You (and I) were not alone there but it never seems to just create that spark

Are you saying the 4K movies were in the coffin boxes previously?

Is store theft / shoplifting rampant in your area? At one of our Target stores one day the door security guard took off after a ‘runner’ who shot out the door. Two more joined him and brought the offender back in the store. I was about 10 feet away when this all happened.

Where I am it is terrible, but only Target uses the bluray coffins, Best Buy hasn’t resorted to them yet.

In my local shops, Target originally was using coffins. But they have stopped. I rarely see coffins or spiderweb contraptions at Target anymore. Best Buy was the opposite - they did not use any type of security casings, but they did make an appearance for some time. However, they seem to be gone for the most part. Thank goodness!

Regarding my comments about the tags - I was at a different location that I have never been to before, so I am unsure if they had coffin cases or if theft was a problem. For the tags themselves, I think they had pictures of the 4k / steel, so the consumer could at least see how they looked. I went in and out so I didn't get a chance to look closer. It was simply something that I had never seen before, but theft must have been the issue.

I suspect the main problem was that Peter Jackson handed over directing duties to Christian Rivers, but since they've been working together for so long, Rivers just ended up channeling Jackson's style and played it too safe. But it's still an entertaining piece of work and a technical marvel.

Watched the UHD disc last night and the picture was impressive. The movie itself was a bit silly, but still watchable.

I think I'm gonna have to get the 4K UHD version of this over the 3D version. Normally I side with 3D but it seems like 4K is the better option with this movie.

Or get the 3D/ 4K combo, best of both worlds.

Actually, I dont think the directing was the issue at all. Its just sort of thin and uninspiring story-wise. The characters arent very compelling either, IMO. Pretty much just straight up "these aree the bad guys and these few over here are the good guys". And thats that. It had good production values and effects. It wasnt even bad...... it was just forgetable. Would have loved to see more about how they got where they are, the idea behind the rolling cities, MORE city-consuming, more controversy, more intrigue and exposition. It lacked a lot of that, IMO.

The 3D was fantastic in this film and really helps sell the size and scale of the whole thing.. It's well worth owning. Ideally you would want the 3D/4k steelbook. Ideally that would be available in the US.

This movie was painful to watch. The disk looks amazing, but the script and dialogue was so bad it’s seem to be written by a 12 year old. Plus, acting was horrid throughout the whole cast. Mortal Engines gets a big YIKES from me.

For those of you who enjoy both 4K and 3D, would you recommend this in both formats, or only 4K or 3D?

This is one ideally I'd pick up a combo for. They are both strong presentations.

Yes both are excellent presentations, I think I prefer the 3D overall but the 4K is absolutely gorgeous.
