Blu-ray Grand Duke

I watched this last night and thought it looked fantastic on UHD. The detail was stunning and the colours were really vivid (if a bit unnatural at times). The only thing I didn't care for was the very orange skin tone Ryan Reynolds had in the opening flash back and a few other select scenes. I thought it looked far better than the blu.

Some scenes looked amazing. Others looked soft or like light was saturating everything. Overall I was surprised by this movie. Good action scenes. Light comedy here and there. Hayek was nice, as always. Reynolds and Jackson meshed fine to me. This movie does have a serious undertone and some intense killing ( Wick style)... got this when it was $15 and I'd say that it was worth it.

While I like both main leads and the PQ is really good, I didn't like the movie at all. I know it may just be me and I understand it's rated R, but when there's too many cuss words in this movie that are distracting least to me that I thought was not needed, like I said, it's just me.

Watched this tonight. Didn't think it really made use of HDR much at all. It just took what was already there in SDR and improved the grading, maybe made the image brighter overall but not revealing new highlight detail, color, or giving the image a look that couldn't be done in SDR (with a brighter calibration). It's frustrating too, because there's a ton of highlights that theoretically could have been expanded upon brilliantly in HDR, as you see a lot of white clipping and bloom as a result. If handled properly this could have looked a lot better than it did. As it is, it just looked like a better SDR grade to me.

This was a solid pickup for under $10. Pretty fun movie even if it was about 20 minutes too long. PQ is roughly comparable to other recent LG relesss like Knowing and Push, though I’d say this is a bit sharper and more vibrant than those releases. There is a diffuse, pastel look to it that is certainly unique. Flames and explosions certainly pop but look cartoonish. The PQ and the movie itself can be a bit much at times but I’m glad I got it. Definitely could have used more Salma Hayek.

This has to be the ugliest movie I've seen in a LONG time. The transfer is probably fine, I just really hated the cinematography. Looks like a glorified cable movie that got into theaters because of its cast, and sadly the movie itself pretty much is glorified cable fodder. Expected more with a cast like this; I guess the paychecks must've been nice.

I had too much fun watching this.
Film: B+ Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson have great chemistry. The story puts them in ridiculous situations and they pull them off with ease, with both of them bouncing off each other’s dialogue with very entertaining results. The action was pretty funnily over-the-top, blending nicely with the story. You can’t take the movie too seriously, but even then it balances the more serious scenes pretty decently without producing abrupt changes in tone with the more comedic tone of the film. The film is nothing amazing or special but I would be lying if I didn’t have a pretty good time with it. It was never meant to be anything more than a good fun time, and in that regard I think it achieves that. Picture: 4.75 / 5 I think this is the first time in which I actually prefer the HDR10-only encode instead of the Dolby Vision one. I started watching it with the latter and the picture had too much compression noise and the bright highlights were even heavier than what they already were given the style of the photography. I switched it to my Panasonic 820 to watch it with the HDR10-only layer and there was still a bit of compression noise but it was considerably less heavy and less frequent. Also, while the brights were still looking heavy, they more tamed with less clipping. The lenses and cameras seem to really have overexposed them but in the DV layer they looked way too blown. I watched the rest of the movie in HDR10 and the results were much better. For reference, I’d give the DV layer a 3.5 / 5. There is a very nice amount of fine detail, especially on the faces of various characters and the clothing they use. Colors get a nice boost thanks to the wider color palette, with the primaries, especially red and yellow, really taking advantage of more saturation. The HDR is what really makes this look great. There is a ton of depth in black areas with plenty of gradations while still keeping them deep and inky, especially in the different black and darker suits which the different bodyguards and assassins use. Like mentioned above, brights tend to look a bit heavy due to the intended style, but even then they take advantage of the higher dynamic range by looking brighter and punchier, creating a really nice high contrast with darker areas without comprising either end of the range. The overall picture is brighter than most movies, and I think the HDR encode makes it shine by accurately rendering more detail and subtleties which otherwise would be clipped in SDR or compromise the brighter cinematography due to the limits of SDR encoding. Audio: 5 / 5 Some nice demo material throughout. Helicopters, explosions, debri, and music really take advantage of the height layer to create excellent immersion. The surrounds are perhaps more active with shootings, fights, chatter, and screaming producing nice directionality throughout. The low-end is hefty and punchy, digging nicely into the lower lows to produce some heavily-appropriate effects. Dialogue stays crystal clear throughout, and I was impressed with the separation of the music around the halfway point thanks to the Dolby Atmos mix which nicely separates the different instruments and vocals between the various channels very creatively, almost making it sound like the band was performing in your house. I’m not sure what Lionsgate was doing when they compressed this but they seem to have done something wrong with the Dolby Vision layer. Now it makes me wonder if the 4K disc of RED would look better in HDR10 since, when I watched it in DV, the encode also had some compression noise throughout the movie. Either way though, they both look better than the standard blu-ray, but at least on this it is the rare case that it actually looks better in HDR10. |

This movie was exactly what I expected from a cheesy comedy standpoint. What I wasn't expecting was the awesome kills and gore. Both actors did what they do best. I thoroughly enjoyed this one

This movie offered nothing new, yet it was refreshing to see some different cities from the usual. Amsterdam looks lovely.
