Still haven't even opened my BD so I'm good. I think Braveheart is the only one of this Paramount 90s Prestige Wave that I'll be getting.

If that is indeed what has affected Gump then I can't say I'm too surprised, it really does seem to be the modern trend to 'massage' that stuff to make it less conspicuously grainy, not just from Paramount but on several such remasters/restorations (on BD and UHD alike) that I've seen recently from other studios. But Pyoko hit the nail square on the head in another thread: sensitive "management" of the coarser grain in those shots is one thing, slamming them with overt NR which makes them stand out like a sore thumb for the opposite reason (too much grain, now no grain) is no good to anyone either.

I'm no major fan of the film so I hadn't pre-ordered it for that reason as much as anything, but now I'll definitely give it a swerve - until more reports come in, at least.
Grease's new 4K master did have some DNR but it was still the best the film has ever looked. A lot better than the old Blu-ray release. I still haven't seen the 4K disc but saw the 4K remaster when it played in theaters.

If Forrest Gump's DNR is like that, it might not be a dealbreaker, necessarily. However, if it's like the DNR horror of many different Blu-ray editions, then that is a downright shame.

Glad I didn't chance a preorder on this. The 4K disc roulette continues.

I'm really baffled as to how we get some of these crap releases. I think that colour grading is a bit trickier but you'd think that the people who actually decide to work in remastering would have some sort of passion for and understanding of film and would be able to perceive a loss in detail when they're producing it. I guess their bosses might not so much, and they're the ones they have to please, and I know sometimes they'll be given a piece of shit as a starting point but come on.

Wasn't planning on buying this anyway but now worried for M:I

Paramount is really letting me down with these catalog releases.

What a disappointment. This is one of the most cherished movies in Paramount's catalog, and this is how they treat it?

Between what Paramount's been doing and what Cameron allowed to happen to T2, I'm suddenly terrified for Titanic...

Exactly how I feel.

Paramount was definitely on Sony’s level with their new releases. Which had me thinking they could challenge them for their crown with their catalog releases—but between GREASE and now this debacle, they’re not even close.

For shame.

They were/are doing great things with DI-sourced materials, as most studios were/are, but the acid test was always going to be these actual remasters from film which is why I never gave myself over totally to the Paramount UHD fan club. The disappointment is somehow easier to bear when you don't expect too much from them to begin with.

They seemed to get off to a terrific start with Tomb Raider 1, and I know that SPR's & Braveheart's UHDs have a lot of fans out there - the underlying transfers from film to video have least been handled impeccably, despite my misgivings re: the poor compression - but Grease really is a cluster**** and now we're hearing that Gump is gimped. That's not a track record that inspires immediate confidence in any future film-based remasters from them, it'd be just my luck that MI2 gets top-tier UHD treatment while the first MI will be thwacked with the DNR stick.

Yeah I'm gonna wait for reactions on the MI movies. Of course I'll still get them all at some point, but if any of them have been badly fudged up then at least I won't have to get those right away.

3-5 should be fine as they're being migrated directly from DIs, but 1 and 2....let's play UHD roulette!

On a positive note, M:I's blu-ray is dated as hell so even if Paramount fudges the UHD, it should still be a purdy nice upgrade.

Forrest Gump had the (mis)fortune of having an already excellent blu-ray so there was always a danger Paramount could end up screwing themselves if they tried to be too clever re. grain management etc.

I'll take a fudged upgrade to be an upgrade only so far, people said the same thing about the horrible DNR-strewn Star Trek TOS and TNG movie Blu-rays (Paramount, take a bow) but I can't stand most of them, I'll gladly watch the respective DVD instead of those Blus. Same goes for MI, if Paramount screw that particular pooch hard then I'll happily go back to watching the AVC-encoded Blu. At least Grease - as botched as it is - has the 70mm audio going for it.

I’m glad I dint buy it. I suppose the hdr is like seeing Hilda Owen getting out of a shitty Austin allegro rather than Jennifer Lawrence getting out of a Ferrari and running towards you with a box of chocolates! Haha!

I never got around to buying the M:I blu-ray so i'm all in on the UHD regardless of what potential horrors may lie in store . It comes with a 1080p consolation prize anyway

I'm intrigued by the reactions to Forrest Gump though. Can't wait to see some screenshots to see exactly what Paramount have done.
