I've seen enough material filmed digitally (mostly TV shows) that demonstrate there is plenty of resolution @2k and that it's more the quality of the pixels that matter.

I suppose with this release if it doesn't sell well then HBO won't do the other seasons. So for those debating whether to wait for a box set we might never get all the seasons if you wait.

As much as I love this show, I'm not getting a copy of season 1 I won't be able to unload in the event a 4k box set is released.

It pays to complain:

Amazon now lists GoT 4k as being in stock, but my order was still "we'll notify you" as to when it would ship. A call to customer service said this was due to a "technical error at the warehouse." The rep apologized, and processed my order to ship ASAP with an upgraded one-day delivery. So, hopefully it will arrive by Friday.

If they can't commit to a complete release on UHD for one of the most popular shows in TV history without a ton of people financing it along the way, then it didn't stand a chance anyway. Had this been a new, underappreciated show this argument may have been relevant, but few people with more sense than money would start (re-)buying a show piece by piece with one season left, it's just not a reasonable expectation, especially considering the Blu-ray prices.

As for the Caps-a-holic selection it's about what I expected, a marginal increase in detail with better consistency and less artifacts, but I had still hoped for something closer to the captured source vis-a-vis the grain and compression. I don't know if it perhaps went through some kind of intermediate compression during production, or if it was filtered, or if the UHD compression is lacking, possibly some combination of the three, but raw Alexa grain would have looked better and more consistent than this, it's almost as soft and messy as the BD in some parts.

I can see da dreaded chroma compression noise in some of those caps so that's probably not helping matters.

Has a distributor releasing a TV series on disc by the season ever confirmed the entire series before issuing the first season?

For mainstream shows I don't know, maybe some boutique label, and I know it happens with anime (like a press release with a rough schedule), but that wasn't really my point.

Considering how much cash HBO has been raking in thanks to Game of Thrones and the nearly-finished status of the show I find it a bit disingenuous to try to guilt people into getting these sets.

Personally I don't think a complete UHD release hinges on these sales, the show is big enough I believe it'll eventually get a box set release regardless (certainly they'll finish the HDR/UHD mastering for future streaming anyway), though I actually could see them abandoning the individual releases halfway through if they turn out to not be worth bothering with.

What the hell is chroma compression?! I want to know, but I also don't want to see something that I can't unsee. Actually, never mind. Don't tell me.

I feel like if I just posted made up stuff in here, someone would believe it.

'The retinal adhesionary blue quantum levels are off the charts on this release!'

Couldn't agree more. Plus I'm not going to sit here and explain myself when my shelves are littered with nearly everything HBO has put out on blu-ray, including over a dozen seasons of GoT on blu.

DO YOU HEAR ME PETER!

It's a big show but streaming is far surpassing premium physical formats so in effect they still have to see if it's worth doing.

Also most huge boxsets have absolutely horrid packaging so I'll take smaller cases with a handful of discs each anyway, tyvm.

Still hoping for some kind of awesome House Targaryen or House Stark set with good packaging. Not interested in a box set from any of the other houses except maybe Tully.

I already have the packaging. Just need the 4K discs.

Tbh, I've been considering prioritizing the acquisition all of the bd steelbook seasons instead.
