I see your point, but given how massively popular GoT is it makes you wonder if it were to fail on UHD disc then what other show could possibly hope to succeed on this format?

If they wanted to test the waters I think they possibly make a mistake starting with the first season. They should have released season 7 on UHD back in december last year to coincide with the DVD and BD release. A missed opportunity in my opinion.

Exactly. Game of Thrones is pretty much the worst (TV on disc) example you could come up with for "you gotta support this 4K release or else it could fail". Which is why I find the argument so tiresome.

Everyone could just as easily buy a couple of these seasons and then they discontinue them anyways in favor of bigger boxed editions or the complete set. The only thing that HBO has proven is that there will be no shortage of additional future GoT printings. If you're worried about this getting a complete release then you haven't really been paying attention. People here just want other people to buy it so they can keep getting their matching individual seasons, or so they don't have to double dip later.

There is no risk that the show won't be supported going into the future. GoT is like Harry Potter for adults. It will continue getting reprints.

Granted the only US editions in my collection are Treme and Deadwood, but every complete HBO BD set I have is individual cases in a box.

Tbh, I've been considering prioritizing the acquisition all of the bd steelbook seasons instead.
I'd skip the steelbooks, to be honest. I had the first two, but I traded them in for store credit at a local shop just because of how flimsy they were. They had cool artwork and all, but I was not impressed. Granted, I'm not a steelbook guy. I've never been impressed by them just because of how fragile they are. And for some reason, most of the ones I've picked up, they never close properly. Either the top doesn't want to snap shut, or the bottom doesn't want to snap shut. The only steelbook I've been impressed by was the Suspiria one from Synapse. I preordered that one because I didn't want to wait for the standard release, and I did not regret it once I got it in my hands.

Another reason to not buy season by season: HBO have been hella inconsistent with their packaging for the Blu Ray season releases and I wouldn't be surprised if they were just as bad here.

The slipcover says it’s an HD digital copy.

This might not be very sharp or have significantly more detail than the BD, but the depth is insane. Excellent use of HDR.

Looking forward to seeing what they do with the other seasons.

Probably not, but this is an odd one since it's a show at the peak of it's popularity, and seasons 1-7 have been on the books for awhile now. Yet, since we are awaiting season 8 (and there is quite a large gap until season 8 airs) it's not like they could just do a "complete series" and be done with it. If there ever was a show to "commit" to definitively, this would be it! Just doing "season 1" isn't much of a commitment. Hopefully the next announcement is for multiple seasons.

All I know is the history of studios doing them piecemeal on blu-ray was not strong. If it was a "catalog" show, and they started out with "season 1", it seemed almost 50/50 that it would never be completed. With "current" shows still airing on television, it might have even been worse with shows just going DVD only randomly in the middle of their run.

In either case, I expect Game of Thrones will ultimately be completed on UHD - it would be pretty shocking if it isn't - and a deathblow to the format (at least as far as future TV series go). Hopefully it won't be long before they announce more seasons to help inspire confidence. Ideally, they would have all of 1-7 out there before Season 8 airs.

Yeah I saw the comparisons at caps-a-holic. I guess they pulled all the detail they could out of it already with the blu-rays, but the colors are nicer on the UHD. Don't know if that's enough to make me re-purchase them all though.

I have the disc and there's definitely no lost detail. Looks brand new.

It's worth it, in my opinion. The HDR brings so much life to the image. On my setup, in terms of sheer depth, this is one of the top UHDs in that department.

It's not perfect by any means, and probably not a top tier UHD in overall quality, but it's still fantastic and worth the upgrade.

Hi all, sorry if this has been answered already, but I’ve read that not every episode has commentary. Is this true?

Thanks
