I must have a faulty disc because a lot of scenes looked downright bad from DNR. The jungle scenes in particular. The beginning towards the Vietnam scenes looked very good to excellent but when DNR pops it’s head it’s bad.

I'm not yet in Vietnam, but you probably have a normal disk. Every reviews I have read mention that scene. But so far, I still find the disc looking better than the blu-ray.

Yeah, like I said, some scenes look downright gorgeous but the others are bad. It’s one extreme to the next.

Most of the Vietnam section looks rather processed and other than a few bits here and there the rest of the transfer is solid.

It's either source related (some rough shots I'm sure are due to the more primitive and lower rez digital to print effects technology of the day) or Paramount has a monkey running the mastering controls. |

The entire Vietnam section of the film is wall-to-wall VFX work -- pretty much every shot in the firefight was digitized and filmed-out at 1K-ish resolution. It looks soft and smooth in 35mm projection.

Tell me more, tell me more?
I wish I knew more. A poster over on the Home Theater Forum site was pretty emphatic that his recently purchased version of the UHD did not have the red streak on Travolta's head. My main reason for posting is I can confirm that digital red smear glitch is totally gone they must have fixed it silently as its not there anymore. The version I bought was shipped direct from the Sony DAC pressing plant in North London, England. So this means its from the latest batch made in the pressing plant as they ship the stock direct to you so it does not come from older stock sitting in a warehouse gathering dust. Here in the UK Universal Pictures & Sony have setup a website called Zoom which sells 4K UHD direct to the public & the discs are always shipped direct from Sony DAC (their name is all over the packaging). https://www.zoom.co.uk/help/about_us |

Ugh, why did it have to be HTF? They won't wipe their ass unless RAH tells them to, so until someone else confirms I remain rather sceptical to say the least. I assume no-one's asked him to take a photo of the offending moment to see if it's really gone?
Next time zoom have it in a 2 for £30 offer I might have a look for myself. |

Which email address did you contact Paramount? And did they provide you with a label to ship your 4K copy first in order for them to send out the replacement copy? Also, do you by any chance know the exact time stamp the red stripe appear on John Travolta's head?

1. I talked to someone high up on the chain of the restoration. Unfortunately, I can't give out the name or contact info. Try to email Paramount Customer Service.
2. I am in the U.S. 3. They sent me replacements. I didn't send anything back. However, it was also a thank you for alerting them to the flaw. So, I can't say how you would get a replacement. I took things into my own hands, because others didn't care. One person CAN make a difference! |
