The SE wasn't prepared with 4K in mind (ditto for the Donner Cut of II) so when they've got a conformed negative for the theatrical cut then it makes sense to start from there and worry about the other versions later. Preserve the original first and foremost (crazy, I know) and then if the market is still there do the other version(s) at a later date. Although... Quote:
Yeah I highly doubt they'd have started over with the new 5.1 mix for the Atmos, it makes sense to use the existing 5.1 as a bed and build on it from there. |

But, as I've stated before, you shouldn't be looking to Atmos mixes if you care about the original sound mix. However, most people on these boards don't care. |

well wait, now I'm confused, I thought the split surround stereo stems for the 70mm master print was done as a 'test' - 'Apocalypse Now' was the first film to be released as such - was a full 143min soundtrack culled in 5.1, because I was under the impression, WB reneged on the idea and just released the 70mm print in Dolby A 'baby boom' ??

I actually like the 2000 Director’s Edition’s opening credits soundtrack with the emphasized swoosh sounds and more dramatic boom when the Superman logo appears. If that gets used on the 4K Blu it won’t be strictly the theatrical version but I’ll still buy the disc.
But if any music other than ‘Rock Around The Clock’ is playing on the kid’s car radio during the early Smallville scene, no sale to me. Yes, I realize it’s a bit hypocritical to hold both of those views. Pure theatrical should be pure theatrical. But the enhanced credits sound is still swooshes and the boom, only more dramatic. The switch away from ‘Rick Around The Clock’ is a more fundamental change to the actual storyline. Mark |

As for the 2001 remix, the opening credits sequence is far from the only thing that was changed. The sound effects track for the whole film was almost completely reconstructed, and the music track was rebuilt from the original recording masters. Same edits, but far better fidelity. But again, we have it on pretty good authority that the 5.1 DD track on the UHD will be taken from the original 70mm sound mix. So the "pure" theatrical version (if you want to call it that) will be there. You'll be able to take your pick. ![]() |

It's possible Warner still had the 5.1 master. Superman II was also released 70MM 5.1 (and so was Supergirl believe it or not). |
