I cant seem to find a U.K 25th anniversary 4k release!
US release. Not picking it up straightaway mind you, will wait for a decent price.

If the only thing that's different is the blu-ray, I might just pick that up for $9.99 and replace the blus in my current 4K set. Plus, I prefer the original 4K cover art as opposed to the new 25th anniversary art.

Watched the remastered 25th anniversary blu-ray last night, it looks great to me, in my eyes better than the blu-ray sapphire series edition.

Regards,

Same. I'm in no rush, but i'd like to have the remastered blu-ray as well. No sense in re-buying the 4K (which I got for just £10 new) so i'll grab the standard blu from a $7.99 bargain bin somewhere down the line. And yes, original artwork FTW.

Is it better than the 4K in terms of DNR?

Just picked up the "remastered" blu ray and I'm glad I only paid $9.99 for it because if it would've been more expensive I'd be an even more unhappy camper. The sapphire series transfer is better overall IMHO. It has better grain and even detail. For example, those who own both the sapphire and new one, go to chapter 8 and compare Hanks' face right at the beginning on both. There is definitely less detail on the new transfer. There looks like there was grain management and DNR applied (most likely the same master as the UHD). Colors may look better on the new one though.

This really kicked me in the balls but the audio is weaker on the new blu ray. Hanks' narration right at the beginning of chapter 2 is stronger on the sapphire. Also when he's asking Sally Field about what vacation means the crickets in the backround are a little louder as well as the dialogue and music.

I just skimmed through some examples but I am disappointed. I'll be sticking with the sapphire. I wish I hadn't opened the new one so I could take it back.

Your receiver has no volume control?

You need to raise it at least 4dB. The audio is most definitely not weaker.

Nope just regular old tv volume so it should definitely be noticeable with a surround system. If not though I went back and did some more comparing with both releases for you and I'm sorry but the audio is most certainly better on the sapphire. Go to chapter 19 and listen to Silvestri's amazing score for example. It makes itself known right off the bat on the sapphire. I had to turn up my volume around 3-5 notches on the new release to get it to match the sapphire. Even then the crickets in the backround during the "momma what's vacation mean?" scene are more prominent on the sapphire.

I recall us having this argument before but in my experience DTS-HD MA is stronger than DolbyTrue HD with some releases at least.

Why is the original bluray cropped so much compared to the 4K?

Well in a full surround system (7.1 or Atmos) it definitely isn't weaker, not one bit. Dialogue is clear as a bell, and much better surround immersion - the 5.1 track is front heavy and mono sounding at times.

You also need to check if your dynamic range limiter is on. A lot of receivers can't limit DTS-MA for late night listening.

I don't know. Maybe with a surround system it comes out differently. All I know is that the audio on the sapphire has a stronger sound to me through my tv speakers.

On a side note. I just watched the IT 2017 blu ray and went back and forth between the DolbyTrue HD Atmos track and the DTS-HD MA track and same thing happened. Maybe 7.1 or DolbyTrue HD in general comes out quieter on tv speakers for some reason.

It wouldn't surprise me if tvs having dolby digital outputted of their speakers didn't have some kind of audible dynamic range compression going on to make the experience better for casual watchers. It could explain why disney sucks the life out of their atmouse mixes

So the new 4K edition features the same 4K transfer as last year and a newly remastered Blu-Ray which if I'm reading this correctly is basically a 1080p version of that very same 4K transfer, whereas last years 4K release has 2 different transfers (the older grainier one on the BD) correct?
So if I don't own the old BD it would be wiser to get last year's release to have 2 different transfers to choose from and compare, no?

I actually don't think they look too bad. Im very tempted to get this release as it seems like the dnr and inconsistancies in cgi and the original photography would be slightly less jarring. I do feel the caps look a bit too bright imo but at the same time it makes the john lennon broadcast appear to come from a crappy crt screen

My guess is that the new BD doesn't look as good as the UHD looks at the parts where the DNR isn't too heavy, but looks better than the parts where it is, and it offers an overall more consistent viewing experience.
