Finally got to watch my copy in full tonight! Double featured it with the 2018 film as well. Ending with some universal monster films. Good stuff. Near month long marathon of horror films finally coming to an end... except not really. I love horror so I'll just end up watching more tomorrow.

Of course, if one is putting the contrast much higher than the default 90 on DV - like on maximum, for example - then the brightness will be higher and closer to HDR10, but on some content it's going to clip the highlights as a result which negates one of DV's key USPs in the first place.
I have contrast set accordingly per your settings, both for HDR10 (no HDR Optimizer used) and DV.

Either my eyes aren't that good anymore or the difference is indeed difficult to spot by the naked eye (especially with having to stop the disc etc). I'm hoping for the latter...

What about the desaturated colors crowe-t mentioned? Is that something only with this particular disc, or does it concern other titles as well? I watched/paused the scene in which you see kids in Halloween costumes running out of the school building, and the colors in DV looked about the same as they do in HDR10 to me. I certainly wouldn't say they daytime scenes look more desaturated as they do in HDR10. I also did not notice the aforementioned flickering.

Flickering is most likely due to poor quality hardware (inadequate power supply in the TV, processing power, software, etc.). Nothing like that on C8 OLED and Xbox One X combo.

I watch Horror films all year round. The Halloween season through the Christmas season is the peak time of year for me. In a few weeks i'll start watching my Christmas Horror films along with my non Horror Christmas films.

DV is desaturated in general vs HDR10 [on Sony TVs], not that it suddenly looks like black and white or anything, but a slight reduction is definitely present on my set.

I will be looking out for this next time when watching something else in DV. Curious if I'm able to spot the difference then.

Just remember, the ZD9 is not capable of proper DV.

Yep, the low latency mode is full of problems. Some may get ironed out as Dolby are aware of them (it's actually the players that need sorting, not the TVs, because they're the ones doing the mapping upstream and sending it on for the TV to display) but it's just as likely they'll leave the LL mode to its own flawed devices.

Finished my Halloween 78 and Halloween 2018 back to back.

It works quite well. I still greatly prefer Halloween 78 and then Halloween II as a companion piece but if you want a different take and what it would be like 40 years later, I think they bookend well.

I'm not a fan of the acting of the 2018 one and I think the script could be a lot leaner. I also wouldn't have went as over the top with Laurie. Still, it's a miracle that someone made a somewhat faithful take on the character of Michael in 2018. He's still a bit too brutish but it's the closest anyone has gotten since Halloween II.

Not bad at all but I think next year it is back to Halloween and Halloween II.

Watched this yesterday with the audio commentary (for the first time) and boy that was tough to get through. An hour and a half of John Carpenter saying “that’s correct” one hundred times and Jamie Lee Curtis saying “look at that shot” or “I’m sorry but that’s so scary” every few minutes.

I'll have to watch and then turn off DV next time then. I thought DV looked good on the few films I've watched on my C9. But I never disabled it to compare the hdr10.

I love that track. Informative? No, but I already know a ton about the film. Funny? Hell yes!

JAMIE: That is so f-ing scary.
JOHN: You know, you can say "f***ing".
Jamie: I'm not going to say "f***ing", John.

For memory the earlier commentary with Carpenter, Hill and Curtis is the better one? Been a few years since I've listened to it, though.

Yeah, I think the '18 film works a little better to me with a day or so between - don't think I'll be double billing them again in the future. I'll probably end up rewatching H2 and 3 again this week, anyway.

I'm referring exclusively to low latency DV playback on Sony TVs with those prior comments, if you want DV done properly then an LG OLED is the thing to have. So you're good.

I wasn't a fan of the daytime scenes on the 35th anniversary Blu-ray when I watched it recently.

I picked this up today, and I'm glad I did. Dolby Vision makes the daytime scenes bright again while still keeping the DoPs new approved grade. This pretty much negates my criticisms of these scenes on the Blu-ray where they just looked flat to me.

The level of detail is amazing, really noticeable after watching the series through in 1080p. I don't know if it's placebo or not, but the audio sounds like it has more fidelity than the Blu-ray version in the Shout box set.

I know it's still flawed in some ways, but I like it.

Off topic but I figured some would fine it interesting. I had always wondered why the mask in Halloween II looked a little different from the first. It's close but something was different.

Turns out, it's the same mask as the first but it was mishandled, the paint had been peeling off and since Dick Warlock's head (actor in part 2) was wider, it had a more filled out appearance.

I absolutely love the part 1 mask. To me, the perfect blank face is what makes Michael and it has been lost with every sequel that tries to recreate the look. Halloween 2018 comes closest since it's just a rotted version of the original.

Now that I know it's the same mask in Halloween II, that just makes me love that movie more as the mask would naturally be in worse shape in the sequel after all Michael went through.

For the point of the post, Dick Warlock eventually sold the mask to a collector and here's what it looks like today sadly. Still, it's a piece of movie history and fascinating to see.

They made 3 masks for the original movie but no one knows what has happened to them. It'll be amazing if they pop up one day and hopefully in better shape.

There never was a flickering problem. This is most likely due to poor quality TV.

I thought it was mostly people with OLEDs who reported the flickering?
