Is the Shout disc going to be a limited release?
I am interested in getting it, but I'm trying to cut down on how much I spend on discs at the moment and since I already have a few other pre-orders over the next few months, I'd rather wait to buy it if I can.

The compression is feebs, but don't worry.....the better-er contrast, more-er detail, and sexier color timing is all better-er than the worse-er compression, methinx. Easily.

The only limited thing that could happen, still don’t know if this is similar to creepshow or not, is the outer slip box being only available for a few months. These releases should be available for awhile.

$$$ is more important than honesty, it's not personal, just business. I guess it should also be expected since slowing down shipments has been a regular occurrence from every retailer over the past year and a half.

The scariest, spookiest part of this whole situation is not getting ANY Amazon updates in South Florida regarding the mysterious status and unascertained whereabouts of the enigmatic HII 4k discs. It makes my skin crawl. I feel like I've only had HALF of a proper Halloween. Just knowing that the H2 sequel is out there, lurking, somewhere, in glorious 4k uhd.......Part 1 now feels like....a cliffhanger! I can't rest until I SEE them burn him, to a fine ash, in 4k uhd with hdr.

I'm stunned by the past several pages of this forum... and I've been a regular here for a long time. It's fascinating to see it all "from the inside out", as someone who received and watched this disc last Tuesday. I'll say again that I'm soooo glad I got my copy before all this wave of backlash hit. Without having read ANYthing negative about the compression, I simply enjoyed the hell out of seeing one of my all-time favorite flicks (Top Five, for me!) scanned from the OCN on my 92-inch projection screen. Looked like film and glorious grain to my eyes.

And this mono nonsense? Sure it would be great to go back to the "Golden Mono" that hasn't been used on any release since the mid-90's... but isn't this the very same track people clamored for when the 35th Anniversary disastrously used a fold-down mono by accident (or design)? Isn't this the same mono people were over-the-moon about when it then appeared on the boxed set version of that same 35th Anniversary transfer? People like me went to eBay and specifically purchased that one disc from the box at outrageous prices, just to get the very audio track that people are now complaining about.

It's a fantastic release, and the mono is the same we've been accustomed to for twenty years. I'd be content if this were the final version of this iconic flick on physical media -- and it very well might be.

Back to reality, we can all hope that, down the road, if Shout even maintains the licensing, perhaps based on customer feedback they'll maybe do a limited "studio classics" release in future, with original audio. Or not.

So folks, drop Shout a note, tell them the new disc is a solid effort, could use better compression which is always subpar on their releases compared to their competitors, and then emphasize how collectors WANT OG audio, on ANY release. It's fine and well, and the right thing to do. Keep in mind, Shout also reads these forums carefully, and they KNOW their compression sux, for all the good it's done us complaining about it endlessly for a decade on dozens of their releases, across thousands of pages of threads. It's nothing they don't already know you're complaining actively about. They didn't just wake up this morning and suddenly discover that their compressionist sucks, because someone here emailed them about the Halloween 1978 4k. But as soon as you start "demanding a replacement program", for a release this decent, they've already written you off as a nutjob. This disc is, for better or worse, the best this film has ever looked or sounded on any blu ray release to date, and yet, people want a replacement program...some of the same folks that will sing the praises of a studio 4k uhd release that's based on a blurry filmout that has less detail than the 10 year old blu ray. Go figure.

And while we're keeping score, Shout also gave us a new transfer from the superior OCN as promised, actually gave us the correct aspect ratio unlike prior releases, and fixed the annoying audio sync issue from the Lionsgate disc. Clearly, they should be hung by the neck until dead for this obstreperous diversionary chicanery and preposterous tomfoolery.

Wait, so the compression on the 4K is bad? Does it look worse than the Lionsgate 4K?

Can't believe the film is 43 years old.. The last time any official release had the mono audio was 27 years ago.

In the history of this movie and it's releases.. It's spent 63% of its life(and counting) not being released with that audio. But here we are, nearly half a century later moaning about it still

Cundey and his grading is a moving target every time and if someone wants “original” in a presentation, they would be better off with a fan edit from a anonymous rando versus what he comes up with. People, myself included, tend to assume that if a guy involved in the project oversees the grading, it will be correct/original, but that is not often the case.

It could be better, it could be worse. It's Shout compression. Note that absolutely everything BUT the compression is noticeably better than the Lionsgate release, however.

And now, even worse, if you fast-forward to the end of the film, Michael goes missing, right out of the frames. There's just empty grass there......

NOT TRUE. More disinformation and/or confusion. Several releases -- including this new one -- do have the original mono audio track. It's simply been filtered and isn't as "punchy" or ideal as the "better" version of the original mono featured on the Criterion laserdisc in the mid-90's... but it is absolutely the original mono.
