Agreed. While I would've preferred that Mel reprised his role, audiences are thirsty for Tom Hardy for some reason.

Some folks were already pissed that Fury Road had Furiosa and that it was "her" movie, whereas Max was her co-pilot of sorts. Hell, when Miller hinted that Furiosa would have her own film, some "fans" threw a shitfit.

I know. What I'm getting is that if Gibbo were in the exact same movie then the nerd rage at him being sidelined becuz grrrl powah would've been magnified tenfold.

I’m surprised Oceans 8 made it through unscathed, or did it? I don’t remember hearing much anyway.

In that case I think it helps that people just don't care about Ocean's as a franchise, nor should they after it got run into the ground while the evil men were in charge. Shame we didn't get the other movies on 4K to tie in with it though.

I felt Mad max was ran into the ground with Thunderdome, but thats just my opinion.

Edit: But obviously Mad Max has more of a following.

How does he knows the destination is Arnold's house, (he comes from a different timeline)?

Also Sarah says they want to get off the grid, why then does she travels with her partners on top of the train (exposing herself to be recognised by face trackers satellites and other stuff), instead of inside the wagons which would make more sense?
Sarah's a little nuts. She thinks hiding her phone in a potato chip bag is going to make it invisible, something Ahnold mocks her for.

Not sure about a Fury Road backlash if the film had Mel, it was clearly designed all the way for Max to pass the baton to a female Road Warrior (something we all loved in MM2), and it would work better if Max was older.

Mel gibson in his blood father look would have been perfect as older mad max imo

Well I finally saw it last night. I can see why critics and many fans trashed it. They were going for a soft reboot to make a potential new trilogy. While it doesn’t have the same atmosphere as T1 and T2, it is much closer to those than any of the other sequels including T3.

While I thought some of the plot was weak, it’s not a terrible movie. In fact had this come out 20 years earlier it would probably have been better received. It’s also a shame that Arnold didn’t get together with Cameron and Linda to do this earlier when he was still in 50s. While he’s in as good a shape as any 70 year old man can hope to be, the fact is that he can’t make demanding movies like this anymore.

I personally thought Dani and Grace were good characters. Dani’s background could’ve been developed better though, just as we got to know a good amount about Sarah before Arnold arrives. It took a long time for me to give a damn about her and that’s the sign of a shoddy script.

The video quality itself is among the better 2K upscales I’ve seen. Unfortunately the CGI isn’t high res enough in certain parts which makes the picture look a bit soft. I wish they would simply transfer the DI to film and then scan it at 4K instead of just upscaling the DI. I’m almost certain that the results would be better but I guess the extra work isn’t worth it for them. The HDR is rather subtle for most of the film but the brightness definitely hits 1,000 nits around the climax. It was mastered at 1,000 nits with MaxCLL at 1,000. I think MaxFALL is a little above 400. Black levels are good and OLED displays even the darkest scenes well. I could see many LED LCDs having trouble with the darkest scene. Without having deep blacks it will be hard to see what’s going on similar to that infamous GoT episode.

The audio track is great but not the best I’ve heard. Definitely nothing groundbreaking like T2 was for its time. Blade Runner 2049, Dunkirk, John Wick, The Nolan Batmans all blow it away. But I’m being picky. Most people will be very satisfied with it though.

I would say Dark Fate is a 6/10. Not great but not terrible either. I enjoyed it more than Genisys and Salvation although I applaud McG for at least trying to do something new even if it didn’t work out.

Sure, they don't command what they used to, but these are popcorn films -- established actors are not going to work for scale. Hence, if you want low budget films, you're asking the filmmakers to cast unknowns. They already made a Terminator film without Arnold, and we know how that was received. Besides, financiers want marketing anchors, which established stars/characters like Linda and Arnold are. Plus, just from an artistic perspective, if you've got franchise films filled with unknowns, it's worth just creating wholly original IP and dropping the franchise tag. Studios these days are loathe to do that. So you're back to casting stars, which necessitates big budgets, which necessitates a certain risk aversion because they want to try to recoup their sizable financial outlays.

Face it, any way you cut it, these films are never going to go back to their franchise roots. It's not financially viable to do so.
The problem isn’t so much the actors but the director himself. They need to find people that can do something special with almost nothing like Mike Flanagan, Ari Aster and James Wan. They focus on horror but could easily do sci-fi. Maybe even Denis Villeneuve who did a really fantastic job with BR2049. It’s not easy to make a competent sequel for such a cult classic but he did it.

Too often directors that make these sequels do not try to make something new. Maybe they’re afraid of changing the formula since a lot of money is on the line. Whatever the reason these guys are never able to match the original magic.

We need new guys who can do what James Cameron himself did with Aliens, a film as good as Scott’s original imo but with his own spin.

If you want to see what something finished digitally, recorded out to film and then transferred back to 4K looks like then pick up 3:10 to Yuma or Kick-Ass or Daybreakers or Crank, you'll be disavowed of this notion of it being better than a direct digital upscale pretty quickly lol

Wonder if any other steelbooks or editions will surface. Zaavi will most likely make one, but my guess is they'll use the Foreign poster as an artwork
