I’m sure if they ever sold original theater reels that came with original mono, they would complain about wrong color timing, lossy mono, etc.

The video definitely sounds better but from the reviews does not sound like enough of an improvement to warrant buying a knowlingly flawed release that is virtually guaranteed to be rereleased down the road. Lots of other stuff to spend money on instead and why reward the studio for blowing it? Unless of course you plan to listen only in 7.1, in which case this release is great . I watched this last night and really did like it. The transfer is definitely darker than the bluray but I found that really added to the atmosphere of the film. The HDR really helped with the dark scenes. Unfortunately I don't have a dolby vision player so I couldn't test that out. I really need to get one since my tv supports dolby vision. The original mono not being on the disc doesn't bother me. If you're looking for a demo worthy transfer with bright colors that pop, this isn't the film that's going to showcase that. At the end of the day, I can definitely understand people preferring the 35th bluray given how much brighter it is. It all comes down to personal preference.

Got this yesterday, can't wait to give it a spin before seeing the new film.
How much you wanna bet that when Halloween (2018) comes to home video, they release it along with a corrected Halloween (1978) with the original mono? Like, "hey, guys, we fixed it! Now go buy it with the new movie!!" "Can't we get a replacement?" "A what?" "A replacement if we bought it already?" "Yes, go buy it again to replace your old one!" |

Hey guys, My local Target didn't have any in stock either. I had pre-ordered from Amz. Rcvd my copy yesterday with a slip. I remember watching the Anniversary Digibook a few years back and in my opinion it looked excellent. I'll give the 4K a look this weekend. The new Halloween trailer got my attention and is getting positive reviews. I'll go see it when it comes out!

I watched it last night and my opinion is that while it isn't going to be a world-beater in terms of the top notch UHD transfers of today, nevertheless this UHD brings a nice if subtle touch to the look of the film. Most notable are the deeper blacks that look nice and the added shadow detail you see. I also enjoyed what HDR brought to the table, particularly the rich glow of the pumpkin sitting outside Michael's house in the beginning. The opening credit sequence's titles seem to have a stronger glow to them which I enjoyed. For me in terms of detail, when Laurie is walking down the street early on, you can see more detail as you look at the trees, every leaf coming across nicely.
For me again, since the blu-ray was already a nice looking transfer, the improvements land on the more subtle end but that certainly isn't a bad thing at all. This is the best this film will look and I think it is one of the better LG titles to be released and I would recommend it. |

Watched it back to back last night, detail is more than a little better. My God the grain is so tight, what an absolute pleasure. There indeed is a spot or two where the grain goes haywire, but for like a couple sec. I thought the blacks were perfect, and although the presentation was on the dark side, I compensated by tweaking the backlight up a bit and turning up contrast a point or two(on the oppo) and it worked beautifully. The color timing did seem close to identical to the 35th, and I still love it. I agree with the reviewer though that colors are definitely drab. But it works quite well imo. Had this release had the original lossless mono, this would hands down be the definitive version of Halloween to have imo.

Is the lack of the original mono just laziness or a deliberate choice? It seems strange that it wasn’t included considering Scream Factory corrected this mistake for the box set.

Watched this last night. What a beautiful presentation. The blacks were wonderful and the contrast magnificent - truly like watching film.
I was very struck by the lighting in this movie - the artistic aspect of it. It's the true star of the movie in my humble opinion. |

I think a combination of both. Deliberate in the sense of providing a mono track for purists, laziness in the sense that they didn’t bother to check that it was the correct original mono or not.

I was not aware that SF reissued disc 1 from that set? Was there a recall on it? I though disc 4 was the only one that had a problem. I have the set, does it have a V2 on that disc or something to know it was the corrected one from the first film?
