I watched Mission: Impossible II yesterday:
Good picture all around, it still had a bit of compression problems like the first (film grain looking a bit chunky within bright highlights), but overall it looks pretty good. The whole film looked a bit 'hot' with its colors but that seems to be inherent to the source. Detail was nicely rendered, definitely a jump over the standard blu-ray, but it still had a few of soft spots (due to the lenses and focus). Contrast was very spot-on with plenty of shadow detail, solid blacks, and gradational bright whites. The picture definitely 'pops' and while it does not look as atmospheric or filmic as the first's (attribute that to the more classy style of Brian DePalma), it is still very loyal to the source. 4 / 5 Audio is excellent. Of course everything is over the top (just like the directing, editing, and just overall camerawork and style) but the lossless track does it justice. Surrounds are pretty much always active and the low-end has plenty of heft and definition. Dialogue always stays clear and intelligible. My only, small, gripe with it is that everything is so overloaded and turned up to 11 (not my receiver, the mix itself) that some of the sound effects can sound a tiny bit muddled. Pretty great nonetheless though. 4.5 / 5 I'm glad I got through it but damn, this was basically a parody of action/spy films. Very fun in a can't-take-it-serious way, but there's no way to enjoy it with a serious tone. About half the movie was in slo-mo and by the third act I was having a blast. Freaking John Woo. This film is a riot. I'd still recommend it because of how crazy and over the top it is, plus the solid transfer doesn't hurt. Last edited by samlop10; 07-12-2018 at 07:34 AM. |

Mission: Impossible III
Picture seemed very clean but it was obviously heavily digitally processed (from the source, ie, the DI, not a fault of this transfer). The picture looks very punchy thanks to the HDR, with contrast staying very high (again, from the source), perhaps a bit too high as now the Dolby Vision encode reveals moderate black crush from that early DI. The palette stays mostly within shades of blue and black and perhaps that black crush was intentional as it not only accentuated the frantic style of the film, but it also seemed to almost dial the background visuals down to focus on the character's faces which stay mostly well-lit. It sounds weird but it works for this film. Bright highlights had plenty of punch (more than the previous two), with a tiny bit of clipping. Again, this seems to stem from the source and not a fault of the DV transfer, the HDR just simply makes it more obvious. Film grain seemed better handled, with a fine layer covering the entire portion of the picture, looking very well-defined and not chunky at all like the previous two films which looked a bit so at times. As mentioned above colors here are kept dialed down but certain sequences, like in the Vatican, do reveal how the expanded color palette can improve the picture over standard blu-ray in terms of color range. Fine detail is a considerable upgrade over the standard blu-ray. Another solid transfer, this time with pretty much perfect compression, only held back by its source. 4 / 5 Audio was better balanced and defined than the previous entry, doing a perfect job both in quiet scenes as well as in action-packed ones. The low-end is very well defined, supporting the soundstage with more than enough authority to carry the heavier sounds like explosions and guns being fired. The surrounds are kept to good use, used appropriately for both atmospherics and discrete effects. This one would have sounded amazing in Atmos, but alas, the lossless 5.1 will do, which thankfully upmixes greatly with Dolby Surround, almost sounding like an actual Atmos mix. Overall, it holds up extremely well and I think it is still demo material for a non 3D mix. 5 / 5 JJ Abrams really knows how to build action scenes without forgetting about the tension, both of which this film has plenty of. It's almost like he mixed suspense elements of the first and action ones from the second, with a better approach to action which compliments the tension better. It is very adrenaline-driven but JJ Abrams carries that very well, with the right pacing and amount of action which leaves you tired (in a good way) by the end. I don't remember enjoying this one before as much as I did yesterday. Now I'm curious to see how the other two will hold up. |

![]() Comparing M: I 3 to any of the Transformers movies is a bit too much I think. I consider TF to be trash but I am able to enjoy them to a certain degree, although that has probably also to do with the (3D) picture side of things. M: I 3, as much as I dislike it, is ofcourse by no means "trash". ![]() |

Watched Ghost Protocol to wind down after the England game. What a phenomenal disc and a great showcase for the format. At the opening shot I turned to my partner and said "wow, this is going to look tasty." and the film didn't let up for it's duration, only disappointing when going back to the stellar 35mm footage after the picture had somehow become even better with the IMAX sequences. This was wonderfully filmic throughout with a fine layer of grain, a lot of depth and an unbelievable level of detail. HDR highlights were numerous and not subtle. The whole thing just popped in such a wonderful way.
Wasn't sure about shelling out the money for this collection upon release but I have absolutely no regrets. Whether it's a 2K DI, 4K DI, old scan, new scan whatever - each film has been a notable improvement over the BD release. I still have RN to go but the screens I have seen make me certain that it will be great. Also, I like the Ethan we see in GP/RN more than any other particularly because of his more relatable reactions to the ridiculous shit he has to go through. Realising he has to go on the outside of the Burj and the "No shit!" when he has to get back in always have me rolling ![]() |

Can't believe I'm going to end up investing $100+ in this series again - and this is AFTER the price drops. I still need I and III.
Was watching MI II last night and I didn't hate it as much as the first time but it's still the odd man out when compared to the rest of the series. For instance, what was the point of that mountain climbing prologue? And seeing yet another actor playing the IMF Chief felt patchwork-y. Who's playing that character in Fallout? Dwayne Johnson? lol |

I believe Alec Baldwin is reprising his role from the last movie. He would be the first one to return to that role. Every movie it seems like has had a different IMF chief each time.

Soooo, I've only ever seen the first movie but I just received 1-3 in the mail and am waiting on 4 and 5. After reading through this thread I've noticed a bit of a pattern and I'm admittedly a little concerned. My question is this: approximately how drunk should I be before placing MI:2 into the Oppo?

From my understanding the uk boxset is identical to the individual releases. Although I'm not sure if the individual blu-rays are region locked but the 4k discs should be region free.
