3. If the above has any chance of happening, what about a boxset Superman I & II (Donner Cut) in 4K?
4. Is it worth the $25 Amazon has it for right now?

2. I would imagine you may see the theatrical Lester/partial Donner version of Superman 2 on 4k Blu-ray.

It would take millions of dollars to do a more polished Donner Cut with superior uprezzed 2k or 4k effects, John Williams supervised music cues added, and even then that edition isn't a finished movie product (just a rough guess-timation of what might have been if Donner had not been kicked off the Superman project - it's more like a fan cut).

Now, someone with some mad skills COULD assemble a new dual directors credit edition and create a WHOLLY completed film using both versions and a few small polishes here and there, but you would have to put a lot of the Lester shot stuff back into the film (Paris, Niagara Falls, a lot of the small country town) - More along the lines of the ABC TV cut version as a template, but fully restored from the original elements in 4k.

4. Get the 4k disc.

I can imagine a well polished Donner cut with all scenes in 4K, is almost an impossibility.

Maybe just a theatrical cut in 4K, with a secondary Donner cut in 1080p as it was released for the blu ray. Just something that provides a way to view both versions for a final resolution to what the Zod storyline was meant to be. Seems like the final act in Lester's cut was reworked to be totally different to what Donner was planning and had filmed during Superman : The Movie.

I have a hard time buying any release at a certain price if I know it's been available for cheaper, and Superman has been available for $20 or less so I would recommend waiting. The transfer itself has issues so I don't feel like it's something you need to get asap.

I'm afraid I might be trolling at this point, but this my favorite movie of all time and have been watching it for 35 years and the 4k is the worst I have seen it.
Nobody believes me but flick through the chapters and then do the same with the Theatrical blu ray and tell me the 4k colour is better.

I wish I could take screenshots to show the comparison but I don't have the 4k functionality.

Thanks.

Yeah some screen shot comparisons between this 4K release and the older blu-ray would be nice to see exactly what the difference is.

Has the slipcover been discontinued for this one? I know, I know...I'm one of those slip cover guys! The reason I ask is I've noticed The Matrix in stores is still packaged with the slipcover...but I've also seen other WB movies without. I've never seen this in stores...so, Amazon or private seller looks like the options atm.

I've finally got my UDP-203 hooked up to an LG C9, allowing me to see true DV instead of the HDR to SDR that I was watching before. I now have the UDP-203 set to TV-led DV, and I think I've got everything dialed in short of calibration with a meter. The garbage mattes during the flight to Earth were horrendously obvious in HDR to SDR, but I'm not spotting them at all now. The same mostly goes for the banding during Sup's flight over the Earth after the prison yard scene. I do see one faint band at the left of the screen, but it's nothing compared to what I was seeing in HDR to SDR. I'm also good with the Kryptonian suits. They are no where near blinding, but they have a very appropriate white glow that seems right to me, much like reflective tape when lit at night. What still looks a little strange to me is that during the approach to Krypton, the structures of the Kryptonian "city" still have a bit more of a gray plastic appearance than the white snow/ice/crystal appearance they have in the SDR version.

Some indications that may be a possibility. Amazon has held the same price on this 4K disc now for nine straight months and few other sellers even carry it in stock. Check eBay - there are few new copies circulating.

I'm guessing that Warner didn't manufacture many copies beyond the initial run. I'm wondering if this has sneakily gone out of print for some reason.

I take it that you decided to quote that post without reading on?

I did read your post about using HDR10, but I haven't tried forcing HDR10 from the disc yet and I was trying to compare my DV experience from the disc with yours. I'm quite pleased with how the disc looks in DV. While I found the complaints you mentioned glaring in DV HDR to SDR on my old TV (which also suffered from elevated black levels and less than optimum gamma), I found them to be entirely absent (garbage mattes) or nearly absent (banding) when viewing in DV HDR on my C9.

Perhaps DV has been updated since your post, or maybe your display is doing something different in DV than mine is? I could still have something amiss in settings on either the LG C9 or the UDP-203. I did have the UDP-203 set to AUTO for Dolby Vision for a week or two before learning that some of the oddities I was seeing in DV were resulting from the 203 feeding my LG a player-led DV signal in AUTO. One of the oddities were the red lights (brake lights on cars and stop lights) in the first Metropolis shot looking unusually prominent and rather dark.

For what it's worth, my wife ordered this for me, from Amazon, about three weeks ago (could not open it until my Birthday!), and it came with the slipcover. The slip even had a Superman 80th Anniversary sticker on it!

Your mileage may vary. Up, up, and away!!

I'm waiting to find out. In fact, it was/is part of Amazon's 3-for-$50 promotion, which right there makes it less than $19.99.
