It was a small miracle that we got the 4K resto on blu from Shout before Disney firmly shut the licensing door. Not saying a UHD won't happen one day, but probably not under the current regime.

Wow. He had lead such a great life to go before us at 91. He had made some of my most favourite movies when I was a kid. I felt a little spooked out by it too because I had only changed the look of the Lethal Weapon movie set in my wishlist on this site a few days ago. And now the news outlets are telling us that Richard Donner is no longer with us. It feels like I am living in a strange world.

RIP Mr Donner.

I just saw this. Horrible news to end the day. Just love his movies and he's responsible for the modern comic book movie imo. Superman was the one that started it all with a bang for me. I hope to see his Superman II in 4k this year as a touching tribute. RIP

Donner was such a versatile but unassuming filmmaker. He was never pretentious in the way he mounted his films; he just went and shot them in whatever way it seemed would best tell the story.

Richard Donner directed one of my favourite films of all time in the form of Superman and gave me a childhood memory with watching it on vhs that I will never forget.

RIP Richard Donner

Great campy Superman films. Great for their time and Superman The Movie really is the blue print for the Superhero origin film. Very campy and silly now but still watchable. I've a soft spot for this film and have owned it on multiple formats saying this is the last time I need this. I own all cuts too. Director's Cut/special edition is my preferred version but I quite enjoy the Theatrical version too. RIP Mr Richard Donner and thank you for your films.

Would never call the first world camp personally.
They have silly moments but they are not 3 and 4

Yep. Those moments are intentional, and they played exactly the same way 40 years ago. I've aged like hell in the past 42 1/2 years; Richard Donner's Superman hasn't.

These days people seem to simply equate comedy with camp and it couldn't be further from the truth. Superman: The Movie has comedy, performed by terrific actors, written with wit and wry humor by Tom Mankiewicz. I don't know if any of the Superman films veer into full-on camp. Nuclear Man in Superman IV kind of does, albeit unintentionally...I think...and certainly elements of Superman III tip-toe that line (I'm looking at you, battling street light men), but it's just a different kind of humor than something like the Adam West Batman.

Camp was the screenplay before Tom Mankiewicz rescued it.

I always enjoyed hearing Richard Donner in interviews

the commentaries he did with editor Stuart Baird on Superman and The Omen are the among the best i've heard. right down to the moment he applauds when his own name comes up

The first movie is great but I think Lex Luthor might be a bit too comedic. I would have made him more serious.

1. It was a family film. 2. You think Lex Luthor was a clown, but Gene Hackman played it as a veneer with something smug, menacing, scheming, and diabolical underneath the surface. That's a tribute to Hackman as a wonderfully gifted actor. He was willing to kill millions and damage the planet for beach front property after all.

The bit where he looks at his watch and shakes his head at Perrine is all the evidence you need of his evil. Jesus, that's cold.

That Superman Director's Edition-commentary is absolute gold.

He and Mankiewicz know they did something special, and they're so proud of it. Donner credits Reeve and Kidder with coming up with the whole, "You've got ME? Who's got YOU?!?"-exchange themselves just to bust Mankiewicz's balls. "THEY DID NOT!!!", and Donner just laughs his ass off.

Very very saddened to read this. RIP and thanks for the greatest Superhero movie ever. If only the majority of today’s mass-produced superhero drek had the heart and soul and innocence of your masterpiece. Thanks for keeping the inner child alive every time I watch Supes or Goonies.
