Halloween 4K's grain is not that bad, the reason I call this title a downgrade, is mainly because of the coloring issue. it looks as pale as the corpses in the movie.

I notice dancing grain alot too. Definitely gets annoying. Never have the issue with regular Blu rays though.

Daytime shots in Halloween though look super good. Tons of detail and you can tell it's a true 4k scan.

A lot of back and forth in here. Seems to me that changing someone's mind about what they should or shouldn't enjoy is a fruitless exercise.

Do you like watching Halloween?

Great! Everyone reading this probably does as well, otherwise they shouldn't care about any particular release as it doesn't affect them in any way.

Do you enjoy this particular 4k release?

If yes, that's great. Many here also like it, myself included.

If no, that's cool as well. You can continue to watch the release you are most fond of, and probably even sell your 4k copy to one of the people who really want a copy of it. Make them a great offer and quickly unload the unwatchable mess. You can recoup some of your hard earned cash while simultaneously making someone else very happy.

No need to fret about this particular release not being to your liking, as you already have one that you love.

Let's face it, Halloween generally has multiple releases across all formats. Most of the time, there are differences in these releases. Perhaps you would net more enjoyment out of a well loved previous release while you wait for the next 4k release. We all know it's going to come eventually.

None of this is aimed at anybody in particular. I just watched an enthusiast thread melt down into bickering and people posting stuff simply to intentionally offend others who do not share their opinion.

At the end of the day, we're all humans behind our anonymous screen names. We're all film enthusiasts, and we're all part of a shrinking populace that enjoy collecting our films on a physical format.

Can we please not let toxic gatekeeping push away those who may wander into the 4k section of the forum, curious to learn, but afraid to jump into the fire.

*steps off soapbox*

Very strange.

I'm honestly quite surprised that this hasn't been mentioned in reviews (unless I've missed it). The banding is horrendous.

Not seen anything like this on UHD or even BD before.

I'm not Dolby Vision capable but was wondering if DV helps eliminate or ease the banding?

Just gotta say I love this poster and photo. One of the few stills from the shoot that really reflects the lighting in the film. And from an angle that's never seen in the movie too..

I have the c8 with the ub820 with DV and I absolutely do not see banding. Blacks are very slightly raised but imo done in a good way. This uhd master of Halloween is damn near flassless considering the film is 40 years old!

It's really crazy how some people are trashing the 4k transfer. Halloween has never looked this good. Come on guys. For a movie that is 40 years old! To be quite blunt if most 4k movies don't look go on your display, something is wrong with your gear. There are hundreds of displays and players out there and most are not true capable of displaying HDR correctly. Also be sure to have them calibrated before making judgement.

Only noticed it as young Michael is outside the Myers house approx 3:15 and lasts till he enters the house, also a couple of the shots during the Smith's Grove scene.

It's very obvious.

Not bothered by raised blacks, it's the blocks of black that are appearing in the greyer areas in the tracking shots.

Never seen anything like it before, rest of the film looks great.

Most, if not all, theatrical mono presentations were made via speakers near or behind the screen to nail the dialogue to that position). Now, BELIEVE me, I originally agreed that mono sounds "too weak" or "not powerful enough" when coming just from the center position -- after all, we have these awesome surround setups and we're only using one channel for these films/mixes. But after a LOT of experimenting with sound field modes and switching back and forth between the number of speakers used, I came to conclude and accept that these older mono soundtracks BELONG and sound best in the center channel; it's why I have my AVR set to take two-channel signals and drop them into the center via Pro Logic II (which works great for stereo surround mixes but drops the entire track of a 2.0 mono mix into the center only).

Additionally -- after watching an old film with its mono track coming from the center only, it really makes you appreciate the full force satisfaction of a 5.1+-channel soundtrack if you listen to one immediately following the older title.

If your center buckles during mono playback because all elements are being pushed through it -- music, foley, dialogue, etc. -- you definitely need to beef this part of your system up. However, my center slightly distorts a bit whenever I push the volume of these mono mixes up too high -- you have to be careful with the volume sometimes. So there is some validity in your observations.

Ideally, your center, left and right channels should be timbre-matched from the same brand and same line of speaker; what are you running as your mains?
Well, this is rather embarrassing for me. I discovered last night that I've been watching The Twilight Zone (in mono) and using my center speaker only. I was flabbergasted that the great audio I had been hearing was coming only from my center speaker, and I realized that I had not fiddled with the mono setting since I got my new AV receiver several months back. I guess I've been using mono correctly since then. Even further, there must have been something horribly wrong with my old AVR, because damn, this center speaker sounds way better now than it ever did when dealing with mono tracks on the older receiver.

Anyway, to answer your questions, I am using a set of Kenwood speakers that are probably about 18 years old. I love them to death, and now I don't even have a complaint about the center speaker, haha.

I'll get around to replacing them eventually, but probably not until I go from 5.1 to Atmos, which probably won't happen in my one-bedroom apartment.

All my speakers are from the same line but always opt for the center with mono tracks. I have excellent imaging from my mains but I love my center. Crossover is set at 100hz for both mains and center. I’ve put a lot of effort into my configuration and use a Auralex mopad riser underneath it tilted up. Couldn’t be happier with its performance.

Thanks for checking Geoff, seems a little odd as a few other peeps have seen this on the US & UK releases.

Not come across anything like it before, not entirely convinced it is banding, I can't do screencaps but if I get time later I'll try and get a pic of it

I've replayed the opening several times too while hunting that DV grey bar whale and I see no banding/posterisation, blocking or other weirdness.

It can be posted every day as far as I'm concerned. Some people don't want to spend hours and hours looking through hundreds of pages of people arguing and being a**holes to one another to find actual useful content.

Good post - and an easy way to see what shots look actually better, which ones are trivially better and which ones dont matter. Seems the color is pumped on the UHD with certain scenes but subdued on others. You can see an uptick in detail for the most part.

Overall though? Nah, I good with the blu-ray I have.
