Not for nothing, but while it's great to have a lot of Superman ('78) in-camera, you can still tell a lot of the rear-projection. Fake is fake, be it in-camera or CGI. People crap on CGI but really, it's just as phony as some practical shots in many films.

It's been ages since I've seen Returns but that jet/shuttle scene was awesome. Don't recall if the cg was wonky in it, though.

No Superman II in 4K for it's 40th is a particularly bitter pill.

Question is, when does Warner Bros. & DC Comics, both USA companies, consider the 40th Anniversary.

I'm going to assume you mean the 50th. But in the case of Apes it was a casualty of the impending Disney buyout of Fox. It probably needed some restoration work for a 4K UHD and they weren't going to spend the money.

Ooops...yes 50th. My bad but missing that milestone, even for Disney, is pretty bad.

Idk, looks fine to me. You could say the effects look hokey and silly in Superman ‘78, and many actually do…

Sure now, but a lot of Marvel and DC digital effects in the 21st Century look cheap and cartoonish and that's right when they come out, not an audience reaction in the distant future. You need practical mixed with some digital. Not all digital. You have to ground the CG with in-camera effects so they blend together seamlessly, as Stan Winston used to do. It forces the CG artists to go for photorealistic work rather than something working outside of the bounds of physics. |
