No there isn’t a “proper” Richard Donner Cut. The cut out there will never feel like a complete movie, it was left unfinished and it is what it is. Donner sadly isn’t around anymore to go back and do some new version anyway (not that he likely would have anyway), so if you want a cut that does everything you personally want than learn how to make a fan edit or something.
Now what they can and should do that is perfectly reasonable is release the extended tv cut, like they did for the first movie (assuming it’s not completely lost). That’s the version I grew up with and would probably take top spot for me over the theatrical or Donner Cut. |

I remember when they would show Superman The Movie once a year on TV in the 1980's. Kid me would sit there getting impatient during the what seemed like 30 minute opening credit scene. Now I love it because Williams' Superman theme is my favorite movie song.

The TV cut could probably be brought up to 4k levels if they restored the archival 35mm negative footage to the same level as all the theatrical negative footage and then a cut was conformed to the classic TV version. Though, it's doubtful given that WB didn't even release the Donnor approved extended cut of the first film in 4k. |

Res got nothing to do with it. Never has done. Nice new HDR grade to remove the teal drench plus a far betterer encode to get rid of the banding on the bit starved HD version and I’d be all over it.

I wouldn't buy SR unless it had a new video master. The quality of the HD video master that was done for the film's release was poor and it's deficiencies carried over into the theatrical and home video presentations. Now that we have far more powerful post-production tools, they can easily handle the Genesis footage properly and put out better quality shots with HDR grading, but the 35mm/digital VFX stuff will always be as bad as it was when it was made, unless it gets redone.
