[edit] Although I've just noticed the war paint, it looks all ****ed up and posterised in the 4K. How weird. |

Yeah, that warpaint shot is odd. But I guess I understand what happened. It's blue similar to the sky behind, so perhaps filters for elimination of debris and print damage was calibrated to do it on blue background for that shot. So it did it's job on Wallace's face too. ![]() Last edited by OutOfBoose; 05-15-2018 at 08:33 PM. |

Same here, except mine had one copy of Gladiator as well. So glad I got there early this morning. I got the last Rick and Morty exclusive steelbook as well. The only movie I didn't buy was the one they had hundreds of.

Yeah, I'm being reminded of John Travolta's red war paint in Grease all of a sudden. Note that the tone of the blue of Mel's actual war paint is identical to the sky, perhaps some sort of keying was put on that colour in that shot for whatever reasons and it's wiped out the detail on his blue makeup too.

Its not possible that the blue portion of the gamut is being compressed downwards for the SDR conversion that would reduce some of the bit depth and make some of the gradations in blue basically disappear in the comparison? I have no idea how they manage these clinical screencaps.

At any rate people shouldn't forget that they are looking at SDR converted caps here. |

It is indeed strange that a 1.85:1 film with a smaller negative size than anamorphic 2.40 seems to give bigger gains. I guess it all depends on how the film was shot (film stock, lenses, etc) and how good the existing BD is. With SPR I'm quite shocked that there's as much of a jump up as there is, as the existing disc is already stellar. I keep reading these posts from Geoffy and others who gush about HDR and wonderful looking grain and I keep kicking myself for not being on the UHD train yet. It calls me..sweetly...I try and resist yet I cannot look away... ![]() |

Someone who restored the french movie Les Tontons Flingueurs (1963) in 4K said that the resolution of the OCN was equivalent to 5K/5,5K, so even the 4K scan did not extract all the details. I don't know if it was filmed in 35mm 4perf though.

So Braveheart is one of my all time fav movies and im super pumped to watch it tonight. I preordered it off Amazon like months ago and today it seems like it was in postal limbo and i have no idea when ill get it (prob tomorrow) so i went to best buy to get a copy and they only had one in stock???? i found it after like a 20 min search.. ill just return my amazon order tomorrow at bb....but yea how does my local best buy only get one copy? also they only got one copy of gladiator? Kinda weird on two big releases...is this so people only focus on the 200 copies of black panther instead?

It's probably because everybody have already seen Braveheart (1995) and Gladiator (2000) years ago.
They are great flicks but 20-years old. And Black Panther is brand new from this year, plus it's a new huge blockbuster. The people who buy 20-years old flicks are us, the minority of addicted 4K film maniacs. Everybody else, the masses they buy new Disney flicks; Black Panther and Star Wars: The Last Jedi. That's why the quantity on the store shelves varies by a ratio of roughly twenty to one. ___ Saving Private Ryan (1998), another 20-years old flick, and Die Hard (1988), 30-years old. I've just done wandering around on caps-a-holic and now got confused. Why do 4k images look like upscaled to me ??
