I do hope that when they release it as a trilogy they do it in a similar manner to The Dark Knight Trilogy with separate boxes for each film. Maybe too much to hope for.

Boxsets are ok, but I prefer the individual releases because, I like for each movie to have its own case and cover artwork.

Why would you even go into a thread about something you don’t like to make a nasty comment like that? Like, it’s fine if you don’t like the movies, I don’t care about that. But unnecessarily spreading negativity like that is just.. not cool.

God I hate Nerd Rage Culture.

Is this trilogy release date of 12/8/20 real & legit?

If they break up the theatrical & extended and I'm only interested in buying one trilogy set, which one should I get? Extended?

Various sources are saying that the Lord of the Rings trilogy will be released on this day and that the Hobbit Trilogy will be released early next year (probably in March or April which were the usual months that the Middle-Earth movies were usually released back in the day). They might actually separate the trilogies or maybe they will just release both of them on 12/8/20. An announcement might be arriving any day now within the next couple weeks at least.

That’s up to you. Some people like the theatrical cuts more then the extended cuts. I’m only going to buy the extended cuts. I can’t remember the lay time I watch the theatrical cute.

My two+ cents as a diehard Tolkien fan from age seven:

The Lord of the Rings films are great in either configuration. The theatrical films are obviously more evenly paced, but the extended versions contain so much good stuff not included in the theatrical that the choice for me is always clear.

The Hobbit, on the other hand, is a different beast entirely. Skip the theatricals and go straight to the extended. Read on for some whys.

*An Unexpected Journey has, IIRC, 13 minutes of new footage--some nice extra moments, but it's really quite close to the original cut. But...

*Desolation of Smaug has roughly 40 minutes of extra footage (again, IIRC), and with the exception of a gross-out testacle-eating scene (yes, you read that correctly), it's all very worthy stuff. My favorite addition is Beorn's extended introduction that feels very close to the book. This one's my favorite of the trilogy, though AUJ isn't far behind.

*The theatrical version of Battle of the Five Armies, despite my having seen it several times in theaters before it was even officially released, made me question whether I even enjoyed the Hobbit films at all, and really made me resent Warner Bros.' meddling with the production. The extended version, while still maybe a B- movie for me and by far my least favorite in the entire six-film saga, renewed my faith in the films enough that I could enjoy it and accept it not only as a capper to the trilogy but as the final Middle-earth film made by PJ and friends.

*BOTFA, in its extended form, is the only film in the six-film saga to receive an R rating, and it's for excessive gore. You may or may not appreciate or even want that in your Middle-earth movies. BUT: most of the extended material is comprised of the kind of small character moments that were sorely missing from the theatrical cut, and that fans of the films go nuts for.

*Also, the making of "appendices" documentaries on Battle of the Five Armies, which you will only get with the extended cuts, are my favorite behind-the-scenes docs on any of the Middle-earth films, and, along with the rest of the appendices, some of the greatest making-of docs ever made. Even if you hate the films, it's worth owning the extended cuts for the appendices alone.

Dammit, Nusilver, you actually make the Hobbit extended cuts sound interesting, even though I really disliked all three movies in the theatres.

As for LOTR, I watched my brother's Extended Editions a lot on DVD when they came out, but only own the Theatricals on Blu-ray. So I'm in for the Extendeds for that. I expect I'll be alright keeping my blus for the TEs.

I really don't care who don't like these movies. That's fine Ppl i know dt like them either. I like both versions of the 6 series and the soundtracks really enhance the experience for me.

Can't wait to see this in 4k and most likely the AQ Might be in DTS:X. Which is Nice as long as it's LOUD & Bassy

And yet they are using that same piece of fan art from Reddit. They've even the audacity to put their own watermark on it. Wake me up when a legitimate retailer (Amazon, BestBuy, HMV, Zavvi, FNAC, etc) list it.

I saw all the Hobbit movies in the theaters and liked them less with each installment. Liked the first one okay, kind of hated the second one, REALLY hated the third one. Never checked out the extended cuts.

Your post makes me want to give the extended cuts a watch and the series overall a second chance. I'm gonna wait for the 4k release but if, for whatever reason, the 4k release isn't the extended ones, I think I'm gonna hunt down the extended blu rays just to check it out.

Even though I dislike this series, i really enjoy these kinds of posts that are a positive look at the movie. Even in the movies I don't like, I prefer to see the discussion go in this direction. It makes me feel appreciation and perhaps even get me to re-evaluate a movie with new eyes so that I can enjoy them!
