Will there be a revised version of Supes 1? The bright highlights of the Krypton scenes are all messed up.

I would be very (unpleasantly) surprised if Superman Returns is not part of the coming announcement. I mean, releasing III and IV and not Returns would be complete nonsense. I know a lot of people don't like Returns, but it's no way worse than III and IV. It can be a bare bone 4K edition, with the Anthology Blu-ray for extras.

I agree. I pretty much expect only the TC to be in 4K.

No idea yet but sure hope so. Wouldn't hold my breath on anything more than we already had in the past though, except 4K upgrades of the TC cuts.

You're right. It's way, way worse than Superman III and IV. It was a one and done costly superhero film that audiences rejected. At the very least, III and IV have the right guy wearing the suit. That goes a long way.

Audiences didn't reject it. Nor did it have the outright stupidity that III & IV have (poor Chris having to put up with that stuff). As far as expense goes, all the failed reboots including the $60-$80 million spent on Superman Lives were rolled up into the final tally.

It was successful financially but not enough for Warner Bros., and the IP has floundered since.

Your definition of "audiences rejected" is 391M worldwide box office, a 74% critical review RT rating, and a B+ Cinemascore result (and I'm aware that a "B+" can range from being positive or negative depending on what slant a site wants to put on it - it's disastrous if it's a DC movie and fantastic if it's a Marvel movie.... but it's hardly a "rejection").

And if you think the "wrong guy" is wearing the suit in "Returns", then you haven't even seen it. Given that you think it's "way worse" than "Superman III", I have to imagine that's the case.

It was a "one and done" due to the insane amount of money spent to make it. There's no doubt from a financial perspective WB was disappointed that it didn't make MORE, but it still made A LOT. Nobody was exactly doing cartwheels over the similar performance of "Batman Begins", but it didn't cost as much to make.

$391 million off a $223 million budget? not including Cage's dinosaur egg fund. That's a disaster for a theatrical run. I doubt it made the studio more than $200 million from ticket sales.

I would like the Special Edition of Superman: The Movie in 4K. Those extra scenes are cool. I kind of doubt Warner will deliver on that but I could be wrong.

It's even worse than that. Box Office Mojo reports it cost $270 million.

This is why it's a one and done superhero movie. Even the terrible Nicolas Cage Ghost Rider movie got a sequel.

I don't think I ever got myself so pumped for a movie--outside of Episode I--as I did for Superman Returns.

I worshipped I & II.

Hearing they were ignoring III & IV, hired Bryan Singer fresh off of X2, and cast Spacey as friggn' Lex Luthor--I nearly lost it.

Then the movie came out.

I had that same "oh, yeah, I..liked this" feeling that I had to convince myself when the movie was over. Such a colossal waste.

Closest I ever got to the feeling that for a third time was 'Last Jedi'.

Not in 2006. It was the fifth highest grossing movie that year in the USA. And it did make $200 million, which most movies do not. Warner just thought it should have made more.

I almost thought that was a misprint. Yikes.

Oh, this is where we differ. I knew I disliked both well before they were over.

I prefer the theatrical, but I would still like this too. It would also be nice if color corrected differently vs the theatrical UHD BD which seemingly had a few oddities.

WB doesn't do Dolby Vision on catalogue titles anymore. If Citizen Kane and Casablanca aren't worthy enough, I find it hard to believe that Superman III and IV are.

The first Superman got the Dolby treatment because in 2018 it was a new shiny thing and they were enthusiastic about it.

I was generous with $200 million, if I use my usual 60/40 Domestic/Foreign box office rule then it would have made slightly less. Warner wouldn't have made back their production budget at the box office.

They'd use it on "prestige" titles, but after the Middle Earth movies they've dropped it altogether. They didn't budge even for Clockwork Orange, when all previous Kubrickses had it.

They took a page from Disney and kept it for the streaming service.

I’ll never understand the disdain for Superman Returns — it’s a classic, Reeves-era Superman movie through and through, with EXCELLENT cinematography to boot.

I don't hate the movie, but I can certainly understand why others do.
