I love Superman (1978). One of my favorite superhero movies, even today.
But the "Can You Read My Mind?" bit is something that makes me love the movie even more; when it's not IN the movie.

That scene has an almost fairytale like quality to it and I honestly don't have a problem with it.

Plus John William's score is absolutely amazing in that sequence. But than his score is amazing as a whole.

8 year old me, just had no time for that mushy stuff and wanted to get to the good stuff.
Haha even at that age I liked the scene; gave the movie a lot of views on my trusty VHS.

Hah, at least VHS worked, and the player didn't crash every couple of hours or require updating to play the latest stuff.

Instead, Donner holds on it, then cuts to a low tracking shot, and just lets the moment breathe, and then we crane up to the horizon. It's a little thing, but I appreciate it when filmmakers take a little more time with such tender emotional moments before rushing off like a freight train to the next scene to get the running time down. Anyway, it's my favorite moment in a film full of wonderful moments.

I love this scene too, but more so; it is at the top of my list of scenes i am expecting to really look brilliant in 4K. I remember being so impressed with that tracking shot on the Blu Ray as Clark embarks on his quest for what will ultimately become his "Fortress of Solitude". I can only imagine the way it will dazzle in 4K !

Any word on a US street date? I was thinking about watching this again sometime, but I'll hold off if the 4K version is coming out anytime soon.

"I like pink very much."

Anyway, without getting too much into the weeds, the entire flying sequence is a metaphor for love and sexual intimacy in the first place (trust, vulnerability, joy) only presented in a family-friendly way. Watched it this morning with my wife and her eyes watered with love and happiness. That's not cheese. That's life.

I think it works too. The first two movies are just so fantastic and you have to look no further than the talent assembled for it; Reeve, Kidder and Hackman with Donner, (Lester as well) Puzo and John Williams. WOW.

The flying sequence works for me, but then a lot of this film works for me simply because I grew up loving and accepting it as it was. I don't know how I'd feel if I were watching it for the first time now.

When I saw it on the big screen the other night, that sequence transported me. Maybe it was a combination of nostalgia, the realization that both Reeve and Kidder are no longer with us, and the general state of the world right now, but I loved it.

That's nice. But you do realize that someone from San Francisco is going to read your post. And when they're done pooping on the street, they're going right to Vivid Video and suggest Superman: The Movie-The XXX Parody; which will contain a scene of Superman and Lois doing it in mid-air, and some guy on the ground complaining about getting hit in the face with bird poo (and it will not be poo). And I'll bet you $2 that it'll be more critically accepted than Justice League.

They've already done the Superman XXX film. In fact, they've done 4 on vivid and there has even been a gay version of Batman V. Superman and Justice League. They've been doing this type of stuff for years. Any kind of movie or TV Show. You name it they've done it. The Cosby Show? Done. The Smurfs? Done. Pokemon? Done. Sarah Palin? Done.

Maybe they'll toss in that Metro Club scene from Superman 4 as a little bonus.

Verisimilitude. Superman wasn't supposed to be complete raw, or have this gritty realism, but a fairy tale brought to life in the grungy 1970's urban metropolis. Even Donner admits this to be true. They couldn't have Superman be this silly 1-dimensional character like he was in the comics, or the original TV show, but they couldn't have him as hyper realistic either, because then the more silly aspects of the character (costume, powers, disguise) become too apparent. A balance was made, to take the material seriously, but to give a few winks and nods to the audience that this is indeed a fantasy, meant to be enjoyed, and it worked. Everything about this film, from characterization on part of Reeve, the sizzling chemistry between him and Margot, the corn fed nostalgia of Kansas, and the bright costume, added to that robust and triumphant score by Williams all of it compliments each of those individual parts and makes them greater than they could ever be on their own.
