Definitely middle of the road, not bad but not as memorable as number 4.

Absolutely LOVED this movie and am shocked by the negativity early in this thread. It’s all subjective, but goes to show what a couple posts can do to perception.

4 really got me into the series and I’m pumped to put this on the shelf next to it.

No one has commented on PQ, but I thought it was 90% awesome. Super clear and detailed with awesome HDR (just a few rough scenes).

How can something be stunning and mediocre at the same time?

It doesn't destroy Rambo's image. Rambo gets revenge by killing the bad guys. No bloody way Rambo is evil. No way. He kills the baddies like every other film.
Rambo's always been a killer either for his country or for himself. Never innocent people.
He kills extremely bad people but for some reason in this film he's now a bad guy.
Sorry but you don't understand the Rambo character.
I don't understand the Rambo character?

That's funny. I've been a First Blood/Rambo fan since 1982, have watched the previous 4 Rambo films probably anywhere from 25 to 100 times each, and had a Rambo II poster on my bedroom wall when I was a teenager.

Like I said, I don't want to post spoilers. But some of the stuff that Rambo does in Last Blood is sadistic stuff. It's one thing to kill the bad guys in the film. But Rambo went psycho sadistic in Last Blood. I know it all comes down to opinions, but to me the "Rambo" of Last Blood is not the Rambo of the first 4 films. Especially not the Rambo of the first 3 films.

From what I've both read on the internet and heard from speaking with people in person, it's the more casual Rambo fans that are liking Last Blood, and a number of the die hard fans like myself (I'm NOT saying that you aren't a die hard fan) are more disappointed in the direction that Rambo takes in Last Blood.

As a huge Rambo fan, I loved this one! It did seem brutal and sadistic, but perhaps it’s because it is personal this time, given who the victim is to him.

Exactly this. Previously he was just fighting for justice on behalf of others, or defending himself. Of course he's going to get really nasty
[Show spoiler]when it's his family involved.

"You know what you are... what you're made of. War is in your blood. Don't fight it. You didn't kill for your country. You killed for yourself. God's never gonna make that go away. When you're pushed, killing's as easy as breathing."

Quote from the fourth Rambo film. There's also a similar quote in Last Blood near the beginning where Rambo talks about how he learns to "Keep a lid on it."

It's been a predominant theme in the past two instalments, it was also a theme in the original film but since awareness of issues such as PTSD weren't as widespread or as researched as they are today, it wasn't delved into as deeply. Rambo clearly suffers from PTSD and other mental issues and is essentially a caged beast trying his best to keep it together and not get involved in any conflict because if he does then serious shit will happen.

He was pushed, the beast broke free from the cage and all his repressed emotions, rage, etc. were let loose. Having been around a lot of people with serious mental health issues including PTSD, and seeing how fast they can suddenly change into a different person over what many would see as trivial issues, it made sense to me, especially considering what actually "pushed" Rambo in this film.

Shame about the 4K of Rambo 4. Still so crazy to me that a 4K can actually be less detailed than the blu-ray.

The drop-off in detail isn't that noticeable, plus the UHD has more information visible in shadows and highlights. With the absence of digital artifacts and the extended scenes integrating better into the film due to the superior grading, I'll take the UHD over the BD any day.

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned, but does anyone know if the 4K steelbook from Zavvi contains the international extended cut as well as the theatrical cut?

I did think about the line in Rambo 4 where he says that he didn't kill for his country he killed for himself. To be honest, it's my least favorite line in Rambo 4 because it portrays Rambo as a psycho. But it's much worse in Last Blood.

I am abundantly familiar with Rambo's full history in the films. I have never read any of the books, however. I just hate the direction that they have taken Rambo in with Last Blood. Kind of like if Rocky Balboa were to go back to collecting again in Creed 3, and this time he breaks everyone's thumbs and legs and everything else. Don't tarnish the legacy!

It's not a "RAMBO movie," it's some cheapjack Bronson revenge-porn movie from decades past. It's a million miles removed from the character's arc and what the point of all the prior movies was.
He fails in part 1, to escape, and goes to jail. He fails in part 2 as well - gets left behind, the girl dies. Then guess what he does? He gets revenge. You act like it's something new, or that the Rambo films have some pristine "point" and message that can't be deviated from.

It's also funny how you think you know the character better than the actor who played him, who also wrote most of the films. But the Internet is a funny thing.

Hanging up a poster in your room doesn't mean anything about you understanding the actual character and you may like him but please don't use the whole oh I grew with him and had a poster and that is supposed to mean that you know what your on about.
(Star wars fans use that as a fall back too).

I'm a die hard Rambo fan and I love Last Blood. The movie had a different feeling and look then the previous films and he is in the later stages in his life. He looks different too but he has too. He has been trying to put the past behind him but he can't. As always he's forced back into action again.

He has been snapping necks and breaking bones , putting knives and bullets through people in other movies it's just now we can actually see the violence more realistically.

Why would he be the same Rambo as 30 years ago?

Heck he isn't the same Rambo as 10 years ago. He has changed but he still is Rambo.

Sooo he's supposed to kill them less violently. Ummm it's war. It's not pretty. It's not glamourous. It's not fun He's old, slower and lost someone very dear to him and he has nothing to lose now. All bets are off.

I understand if you don't like him due to the brutality in this but he's doing the same that he always does. He's at war.

Not to get too philosophical or flowery, but the thing I loved most about the film was how it was able to convey all this visually through the action. I saw those underground tunnels he built as being representative of the past and/or his demons that he was trying to keep a lid on.

I can imagine he built those tunnels as a channel for him to either get his mind off, sort out or deal with his demons. It kind of becomes apparent that it hasn't really worked for him, so you just see him go down there at the beginning and just sit there with with the loud music blaring, just sitting there with his demons and his discomfort because there's nothing else he can do.

The tunnels represent his own mental labyrinth that almost acts like a storage compartment or gallery for all the pain, bad memories and demons he's accumulated over the years, and then the villains are lead into this labyrinth/hell of Rambo's towards the end once they have awoken the beast, so to speak.

All versions from the U.K are the shorter theatrical cut because it is distributed by Lionsgate there and in the U.S and U.K Lionsgate are only distributing that version. The BBFC has also only classified the shorter version for home entertainment versions in the U.K.

I get that the poster doesn't really mean anything.

My main point was that I'm a die hard fan of the Rambo franchise and have been from the start back in 1982. I've watched the first 3 Rambo films at least 100 times each, and part 4 at least 25 times. I know every scene in all 4 of the previous films. I can quote the movies pretty much line for line. I'm just saying that for anyone to suggest that I don't understand the Rambo character (The Rambo franchise is my second favorite film franchise only behind Rocky) is ridiculous. I'm also not trying to diminish any other Rambo fans feelings about the franchise. I get that everyone has a right to their opinion, even if it differs from mine.

There are many, many complaints that I have about the movie beyond just Rambo's brutality in the film. I hated almost everything about the movie. I would have changed almost everything about the movie. It would have been one thing for Stallone to have made this film and have called it "Death Wish," I just wish that he hadn't ruined the Rambo franchise in my eyes.
