Admittedly I've never seen the special edition of Superman (nor the mega-long TV version), so I'm not particularly fussed about its exclusion.
Oh I'm sorry. I forgot that the 4k is theatrical only. My bad.

So from that, no new cut of IV (or TV cuts of II and III) Oh well. Disappointing, but wasn't really expecting them. Good to know now I guess.

As a person on the cusp of picking up a 4k player, and Superman being one of my first purchases. What are the issues with the previously new 4K release?

I'd buy the 2 Donner Cuts as solos, but not a box set that included 3 and 4. And not solos of the Theatrical cuts of 1 or 2.

So I guess I'll be saving some money for something else.

But a great set for people who love all the Theatrical versions.
The Donner cut of 1 is the theatrical cut. There an extended version of 1 that was made for TV showings but Donner hated it and considered it a lesser cash grab.

He made a new version in 2000.

Good thing I still haven't picked up the UHD, lol...
Woah, I missed that bit about fixing up the 2018 disc! I would still love to have the SE in there (and it’ll be an odd development if it’s not) but I’ll take a fixed theatrical any day of the week! Sort out the orange flash in the credits, the terrible grading of the Krypton council scenes, the visible garbage mattes as kal’s pod flies to earth, the weird posterised noise in some other scenes, the dreadful quality dupe in Luthor’s lair and the giant vertical bands during the iconic sunrise shot at the end and I’d be so happy. Oh, and give the split-surround 70mm mix a lossless encode too.

As for Warners maybe redoing other stuff, I dunno. For some reason they’ve always been open to rejigging Supes’ discs, the first Blu of STM had lossy audio with VC-1 for video but it got redone for the anthology boxset with lossless and AVC. They also snuck out a stealth upgrade for Superman Returns to add PCM and TrueHD 5.1 and then redid it a third time for the boxset version to add the Return to Krypton deleted scene! They never did re-encode the haggard VC-1 video though. Doesn’t look like they ever will

I'd add correcting the weird salmon-tinged skin tones to that list. There's some extremely wonky things going on with the original disc when it comes to contrast. It's like it's simultaneously too bright (whites of eyes), yet also too dim (skin tones). It's the most bizarre dichotomy I've seen on a disc. It's almost like...how to describe...like I'm watching HDR being applied improperly...like the WHITES are fine, but the rest is like 80% as bright as it ought to be. It's bizarre as hell. HERE HERE about the 70mm mix getting the lossless treatment. I mean, if Warner IS addressing "issues" with the first movie and going out of their way to redo it, they need to make it worth our while to buy it again. And if these things are fixed, I WILL buy it again, day one.

Not that it’s any surprise but it’s a shame that there won’t be a revisit of the “Donner Cut” of SII.

According to Jim Bowers who created CapedWonder.com (and whom I implicitly trust), they have two colorists working on these new discs - one who worked on I-II, and another who worked on III-IV. The fact that Warner has hired these guys to specifically address the colors is, in and of itself, a very good sign IMO.

Fix the scene just before the helicopter take off where Supes is far left of frame just after the say Jim.
That scene is the worst it has looked on any format. Even my original vhs looks better colorwise if not with the resolution.

Also the 180 shot of Supes above Metropolis after he caches the burglar and it does that 180 turn of the camera looks wrong. The city looks green.

Also the shot when Clark is coming out of the Daily Planet before the helicopter rescue is devoid of colour compared to the Blu-ray.

Lois' outfit is more orangey yellow than yellow as corrected for the blu ray and SE edition.

The theatrical cut of Superman The Movie is one of my all time favorite films. I actually like the theatrical cut of II more than the Donner cut but it has been a long time since I have seen the former. I haven't seen III and IV in decades but can't wait to get them to give them another shot.

If that really is a true 4K remaster of the Donner Cut of II, I'll be impressed. Still, I'll believe it when I see it. That would be a much bigger undertaking than a 4K of the first film's Special Edition.

But it's definitely nice to hear that they're taking some care with all these.

Damn. I'm glad I held off from buying this one if it's getting a remaster.

But...but...I already have a copy with a slipcover! And the slipcover even has an "80 YEARS" of Superman sticker on it! Now I'm going to have to buy it again?!?

Colorists today have a much deeper understanding of Dolby Vision and the REC. 2020 color space, far better than they did even three years ago. I have no doubt the new grading will be significantly improved.

Since you're Clark and never tell a lie I'm going to hope that's exactly the case

Guess we'll have to see how they go about releasing. Already have the 4k of this and the the old Blu of the Donner Cut of 2. I'd love a boxset in the style of the Burton/Schumacher Batman 4k set.

Great if true. Really would love to have it with the Dolby 6-track split surround as a lossless track this time around, as well as the Dolby Stereo (SVA) 2.0 (which is on the theatrical Blu-ray). Save the Special Edition Michael Thau Atmos audio to go with a 4k release of the Special Edition. The Thai mix doesn't belong with the theatrical cut.
